Yeah, pretty sure I heard similar stuff about Caufield too...

Last year he paced for 51 points and 22 goals. Was red hot before getting hurt. Please don't tell me this kid has no talent and there's no way he can be a 60 point guy. Of course he can.

That being said, the whole team sucks right now. He's not going to suddenly carry us. He's a complimentary player who provides speedy secondary scoring. Absolutely zero wrong with that. But he's not going to do it when the team is drowning.
He looked much better last season but that pace was also with lots of icetime because Dached missed 80 games, not sure he gets that opportunity ever again.
It's a bit like saying RHP could score 30 goals because of what he did when CC was hurt.

Right now we have five top six quality players in the lineup. If the team was firing properly he'd be getting decent points and lots of opportunity.

But his icetime is still way down from last season, and soon Laine will be back and will compete for ice- and powerplaytime. Next year they add Demi and who knows who else, it won't get easier for Newhook to get his share of time. Unless he earns it.

He will eventually be on the third line and used as a callup for the top six when player's get injured. If he and say... Joshua Roy join Beck, that'd be a smokin' third line. We'll have some real scoring depth in the lineup.

He's secondary scoring. That's what we traded for and that's what he should be.

Unfortunately, nobody is living up to expectations.

He was just starting to get hot when he got hurt. 4 goals and 6 points in 6 games. It was the worst possible timing. He came back and it took him a while to find his game but he closed out beautifully. He likely would've hit 60 points if not for the injury. He also would've been around 25 goals.

Saying there's no way this guy can ever be a 60 point player is a really bad take. I totally agree he's played piss poorly this year but so has everyone. I don't think it's solely on this player. He's not a blue chip player, he's unproven, health got in the way of a good year. But he's got talent and he proved it last season. If the team gets its shit together, Newhook will too.
We’ve had like 3 60 point players in the past decade I find it highly sus to say that Newhook would’ve been one of them

2 things.

1. We've had shit teams
2. Scoring was ridiculously low in the 2010s. Crosby won the scoring title with something like 84 points one year.

It's a high scoring league now. 60 points is no biggie. Pathetic that we haven't had that but we will in the coming years.

Right but by that logic Suzuki is a 60point center and we should be looking for our 1C

Uh…. Okay.
It’s off topic I apologize - but the scoring being up is an argument that doesn’t get brought up much here and it really puts a damper on positive rebuild vibes. We might finally have a PPG center but it just doesn’t mean what it meant 5-10 years ago. Every team has 1 of those now.

Back on topic I don’t see Newhook scoring 60 even with scoring being up.

Has 4 goals in 14 games. On pace for 23 goals. Which is more like where he should be. His skill level I had Newhook around 25 goals, 50ish points.

Good rush on his 2nd goal, a bit lucky with the puck, but he used his speed for the first time I think this season.

Hopefully that gets him confidence and I have to eat some crow.

We're gonna need our depth players to be bigger and tougher to play against, IMO. That would be different if we had a big mean core, but we don't.

I wish Newhook the best but it's not looking great, and the longer this goes on the lower his value gets.
Which big / mean players do NJD have? I watched them closely last night, their D is as atrocious at missing assignments as Habs only difference is they have Hughes & Bratt firing on all cylinders
