I just don't see the same thing you do. When Hutson was nailed, and not a soul stood up for the rookie, I knew this team was beyond help. If you can't step up for your prized rookie this year, I can't imagine how Demidov gets treated as well. I hope they add a tough as nails player or two , because this current rendition is soft, besides 3 guys who have stepped up this year. You know I don't like Struble much, but after last game he is off my poop list, I was happy the kid stepped up good for him.
Xhekaj junior and Tuch are coming soon. We'll get more protection soon. And the young ones will get better as protecting themselves over time, all part of the process.

Too late?
What were your team expectations at the beginning of the year, as far as where they would finish up at seasons end?
I was only hoping they would take off from where they left at the end of last season. I didn't expect them to dive head first the opposite direction with a "hold my beer" attitude.

True but also annoying we're relying on rookies to protect the team.

We will need every ounce they can deliver and I look forward to the day they join the team. I would like to see Pezz get more ice time too

5´10, 3rd line winger is not a position you try to fill at the begining of the rebuild. You do it at TDL when you are ready. It was really a weird trade to be honest.
Well they traded for him and expected for him to be a top 6 player, which personally I don't think he is. It's fine now, assets were already traded and his cap hit isn't that bad, once we are ready to compete say in 2 -3 season, he will still be 25-26 so that's ok

Newhook is getting chances and goes to the dirty areas where you need to go to get chances.

He's one of the players I am least concerned about and the points will come for him if he keeps playing like he has.
I'd actually swap him with Cole Caufield at this point to try and spark two lines.
We need Suzuki and Dach scoring goals not just trying to set up Caufield all the time.
I mean what the heck RHP played with Nick I'm fairly certain Newhook can as well.

Agreed , they were betting on him being better no doubt. In hindsight it's not looking like a good move. But who knows , we've seen Alex look better than he is now though , everybody on the team looks extremely meh.

The value they gave up was that of a third line C though and they wanted him to become a top 6 player its not like we gave up top 6 value for him to be fair so it's not a disaster or anything

Seriously?
Yep.
Every season absolutely matters. We're supposed to be building something.

So many here want us to become the next Sens or Sabres. It's nuts.
We are building something. Some seasons will be good and some bad. It all goes towards development.

I want us to win a cup someday. I don't care if we finish 8th this year. There's a big difference in how you go about those two things.

That doesn't mean I want us to tank. It doesn't mean that I don't want to see progression. Everyone does. But sometimes it doesn't come as quickly as you would like. In the grand scheme of things, this season doesn't matter a whole lot aside from what our players learn. Sometimes you learn by losing. It sucks but it is what it is. I'm not going to worry about this. What matters is that the long term plan is in place to build a winner. And I think we're good on that front.

A rebuild is over when the team shows you it can win. We're not there yet.

Habs are at the point where they need 2 bridges players. Habs are like a car, they had a road behind them and a builted road across the river. Right now there's a river to cross and Habs need 2 major core pieces to go thru. The 2 Bridge players. A real 2nd center and a first D, just so Matheson is gone, replaced by much more reliable. With the return of Laine and Demidov next year, I might beleive this team would be in the mix. Habs need another center equal as Suzuki, like Bo Horvat, but younger.

I didn't like the trade then, and I like it less now. He's exactly what I thought he'd be and its disappointing.

Could've used those assets for a player with a profile we needed more.

Its not a lot to pay, the chances of those picks even becoming a 3rd line player is very low.
What I mean is that it's a lot to pay for a 3rd line player. Yes, a very good chance that those picks don't even play in the NHL one day, but for me it was more as to could have we done better in another trade for another player with those picks.

Like I said, I think he is a 3rd liner at the end of the day and he will still be a young RFA in 2-3 years when we will be more competitive
