Oh. So this means the 5 year thing doesn’t exist anymore? Someone else could actually start trying to get the ball rolling in AZ?

I wish I could turn a 450mil investment into 1 billion by running the business into the ground.
If somebody else had 500mil to pony up they could have done the same thing!

I agree its shitty but.. nobody could have bought them and theyd have been f***ed even worse

This way they have a chance to come back - would Arizona fans be okay the piece of shit made big bucks but got them a 5-year lease to work with? Id say so

that’s my hope

but it’s a weird thing: dale hawerchuk and thomas steen’s legacies would then be with their rightful caretakers, but does the opposite happen to the body of shane doan’s career? how is teppo numminen counted? would be weird that shane doan, who was an opponent of the thrashers/jets franchise for all but the first 1/5 of his career, would suddenly have all those games against them count in their record book.

You’re putting your finger on one of the major reason that records follow franchises from city to city. The books become incoherent if they get muddled up like this. It can work when an expansion team is involved, like the Hornets or Browns, but not when multiple relocations take place.

Yeah, the semantics behind this were always so stupid. It's been a relocation the entire time, and the other reason it was suggested otherwise is to appease an owner who's clearly an imbecile.

Utah is not a new expansion franchise is any sense of the words.
They definitely paid the expansion price though.

If you inherit a full roster of players you are clearly a relocation.

It always depends on the terms. In the NFL when the original Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore, they inherited the players but the history of the team stayed in Cleveland. That history was then inherited by the new Browns team.

Let Utah keep Arizona's history and give the Jets 1.0 history back to Winnipeg. Since they left in 96 and Atlanta didn't join till 99 it could work.
