I don't think most NHL fans care about that stuff anymore? If Galchenyuk was Canadian instead of American or Russian, would the media be crazy over him? Had RNH been American, would we even care?
For myself and what I can see, RNH's ability to slow down the game (I think he is the epitome of it) and find the passing lanes in traffic is terrific especially on the PP. His style is being slippery and slowing things down (which is how he played at the World Juniors), which isn't how Galchenyuk obtained many of his points in the NHL last season. I don't think many players possess that ability so young so that's what makes RNH stand apart. I think that Galchenyuk may be better than RNH doing things at top speed. He also stated that he wants to control the puck better this year as he did in junior so we'll see how that ends up.
As for posters here taking aim at Galchenyuk's Russian roots and previous injuries, I guess I give the average poster here more credit. I can see people taking aim at Galchenyuk's knee, but not his Russian roots when he's been exceptionally clear about it and by choosing to play for Team USA internationally has more than backed up his claims that NA is where he wants to play.
Big mistake!
Hopkins is definitely the better of the two at playing at top speed also. He is a superior skater to Galchenyuk in every sense and is equally as good with the the puck.
The only advantage that Galchenuk has at this point is his ridiculous wrist shot but RNH has a very good one himself that he is being urged to use more often. At the end of the day they both have srardom written all over them. I believe RNH has potential super stardom in his future but I would feel more comfortable with Galchenuk due to Hopkin's wonky shoulder.
Some would argue Galchenyuk could easily be the #1 overall pick had he played more than 3 games his draft year. Chucky has size, hands, vision, he might lack explosiveness in his skating. I highly doubt Columbus will take Ryan Murray if we redo the draft![]()
Galchenyuk is better than RNH in a lot of departments. Of course, not hockey IQ, because very few beat RNH at that, but to me its obvious he is better physically. RNH gets tossed around and its not funny, he has very little physicallity to his game, but he compensates with smart and shifty plays. Galchenyuk also has better hands.
RNH is better at top speed, but is not that good in puck protection. I think teams are starting to figure out how to play against him, very aggressive and physical. Galchenyuk is built for playing in the nhl, and I agree that RNH has that playmaking ability to put up a ton of points like MSL or Giroux, but for now he is not handling the Nhl play too well.
At the risk of being called a homer, I'd take Galchenyuk over RNH if they were in the same draft...just cause.
You couldn't be more wrong about RNH's physicality. He has actually been more physically assertive than Galchenyuk so far and both of these players are getting pushed around at this point in their careers.
Neither one of these players will be a bruiser and both are willing to fight for space in the dirty areas.........that part of their respective games is a wash. Teams are not figuring out how to play against RNH, he just hasn't been healthy enough to play the way that he is capable of.

How good/bad is RNH's shot?
Very good imo. Deceptive, quick and accurate. Don't think it's as hard as Galchenyuks though.
Can anyone tell me where they think Galchenyuk will lineup this year? and will he be on first unit pp? I'm thinking about keeping him in my keeper league and at $6 is very very cheap.
2nd unit PP most likely. His line will be getting 2nd toughest matchups and a lot of defensive starts. Not sure what your league counts, if it's only points or whatever, but he won't be put in a primary offensive role.
columbus was scared of the Russian factor plain and simple
THEY ARE ONE Pejorative SlurED FRANCHISE TO BUYPASS GALCHY FOR A 15 YEAR NICE CHRIS PHILLIPS ( AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH PHILLIPS )
BUT....![]()

Nobody's shot is twice as hard as Richer's was. I've never seen Galchenyuk demonstrate anything of the kind shot you're talking about either. If he's got anywhere near Richer's shot he should be using it a lot more. Richer had as good a slapshot as I've seen any player have. That includes McInnis or whoever else you want to come up with.Galchenyuk's wrist shot reminds me of Stephanie Richer's slapper, twice as hard yet 1/2 the effort.

Now that RNH signed a $42 million contract, what does this mean for Galchenyuk in a year or two?
2 years, 2.5 mill per- bridge contract. Right Bergevin?
terms must be 1 year short of UFA so we dont lose him after 6-7 years like Edmonton will.
