“My parents really supported me. I didn't have a very typical path as others... Playing a long time in the CC caliber. They always told me to have fun and to love what I was doing. I am really passionate about hockey and they never advised me to find anything else. Even when I played in the inferior levels.”

“Everything is close in Laval. If I want something, I put it in my GPS and it's not far. I like the city. It's a very beautiful place. In three years it was my first winter. It's colder than San Antonio. But I'm fine with it...”

“On the hockey side, Peter Forsberg was a very intense player with a good game vision. Two aspects that I want to bring to the ice... There's a guy like Alexandre Burrows who I've met every day. That's an example who allows me to think that there's still hope. I've a real model in front of my eyes.”

“I'm someone very positive and energetic... People who know me well know that I'm sometimes a little upset. When I'm comfortable with people, I like it to put some action in life.”

“I'm a big sportsman... In my childhood, I practiced tennis and golf. Two sports that I'm following closely. I also play video games but only sports games. I don't like war games. Probably I'd be a teacher. I'm very patient and it's fun to teach young people who want to learn. The key is to know how to adapt to your environment... No matter what message you want to deliver.”

“It's one of the strengths of Joel Bouchard. He send us his message very well and does it differently with several players or people. If you say something to 20 guys, you've to adapt to their personalities. Before signing in Laval, I didn't know him personally... I didn't really know what to expect... I've always been an intense player. With good offensive qualities. I can play on 200 feet. I thought it was good for Joel.”

“With the path I've had since the beginning of my career, let's say I was really surprised. I really didn't expect it. I had already made plans for this five day break with my family and friends. But I was very honored to represent the Canadian and Rocket organization in the 2019's AHL All-Stars Game. It was really gratifying and it was a great experience. But it wasn't my or a life goal for me. For me, it was a step in the right direction and it helped myself to prove what I can do in my career.”

“My goal has always been to play in the NHL and stay there... I think this is the ultimate goal of all players. Yes, I'm 27. But I don't think I've reached my peak yet. I'm going in the right direction... I'm close to my best years. I still believe in it and my plan is still in the same place. For a late-bloomer like me, I'll take any form of visibility. I hadn't control over my next contract and I wasn't thinking about it. I was doing my little things and I thought it was going in the right direction for me this year. I've always thought that if I've the right attitude and working hard good things will happen...”

“There are many examples (Yanni Gourde, etc). We just have to look a bit and we will find a few players. Some who arrived older in the NHL. Derek Ryan is in Calgary right now. He has been playing in the NHL for three years on a regular basis. The important thing is just to keep believing...”

“I came from a small village (St Eloi)... There was only one guy from my age in my school. He was more or less into sports. So a lot of time, I’d be either alone or with my older brother going to the rink. I was a little more passionate than other people... Sometimes, I’d find myself alone on the ice. When it’d be too dark and windy for them to turn on the lights. I’d come with my snowboard goggles and my neck warmer... There was no temperature too cold that’d stop me from skating.”

“In terms of minor hockey, I played a lot eth my friends from high school. I played a lot in the CC when I was younger... Basically every year besides one year in AA. I remember, I believe it was in my first year midget. I played Midget CC and they wasn’t a house league team. So there was a big difference in terms of players and talent level. But getting to play with my childhood friends throughout high school was important. I still speak to them today... Almost every day. So it’s fun from that side too.”

I didn’t have the typical journey (Midget AAA to Major Junior)... I'd say only half way through my major junior year at 18 and half years, I realize that I had a certain head for hockey... That I could continue to evolve and make something of it...”

“I always watched the Canadiens... It was the team that we always watched on TV.”

“When you’re young and we’re passionate about hockey you start watching and analyzing the players. Looking at them more just on the surface. Looking at their abilities and skill. Trying to take that and put into my game... On the outdoor rinks at least in my head...”

“To be very honest, I really liked my experience in Laval and the coaching staff last year... I find a family in Laval... With a coaching staff who likes me. A mutual relationship.... I really had a real chance to prove myself... I didn’t have that before in my career... From the fact with mine previous contracts on the minor leagues...”

“It was a no brainer when the Canadiens offered me something. It was sure I’d accept it...”

Career AHLer or is he a depth forward (13th)?

Tough to say before Free Agency but given our current 13/14th corps you have to think he has a shot to steal the 14th spot from Peca/Weise if Poehling/Suzuki start the year in Laval. Don't think he pushes Deslauriers out, but stranger things.

My guess is he starts in Laval because I'd be shocked if we do nothing on July 1 but is the #1 callup to allow Evans/Poehling/Suzuki to get consistent AHL reps but will be moved down the depth chart by mid-season.

They wouldn't sign him if they didn't think he could play. With a good training camp, he might deserve a callup or two during the year.

for a cup of coffee at NHL level ? Why not ? But he is AHL material at best. Daniel Carr is twice the player this guy is....

“My goal is still to play in the NHL. I've never been the guy who tried to move three steps ahead instead of going step by step. I trust my process... I trust my mentality... I'm a late bloomer... I know myself... I still know that I'm getting into my peak, getting into my best seasons right now. I think it's really positive with my late development... My best years aren't behind me. It's the opposite, they're ahead of me.”

“Honestly, I think it's the confidence. It's an answer as simple as that. Yes, there are a lot of other things. When you add everything up together, it makes you better as a hockey player... But if you don't have the confidence to do it, it gets tougher.”

“Last year in Laval, I had a real chance and I took it more on the offensive part. I've been offensive all my life and I've never had a real chance in the AHL. To prove that I can play a really good two hundred foot game. But being on the power play, that helps you being confident. A lot of people didn't really know me... Maybe people started to know me and notice me more. But most of the time that's the way I like it. Being in the shadows and just doing my thing. And working hard every day in practice. I know, it's cliche, but I think that's the right approach...”

“I'm really versatile... I can play every single role... On every single line... Last year in Laval, I had good numbers. I'm a great two way player... I'd say I'm a really efficient, consistent player... I think my biggest asset is my hockey sense... Regardless of the time of the game or the situations I'm in, I will find my way to adapt. And my hockey sense will help me, obviously. So I think that's my biggest asset...”

More career AHLer atm... Unless, Belzile surprises us after.

I see Belzile more in Laval. There's some cinderella story with fringe players, so... Every time, our 4th line is changing... His recent contract is a gift on his pocket.
Career AHLer. Might Darche it eventually, but I doubt he gets 250 games like Darche did.
What's his position in the Montreal forward chart? He's already out? What's his weaknesses?

It's not a waste of a contract?

Just not as good as our current wingers.

I like the fact that he compares himself to Danault. I think he's even got a higher offensive IQ than Danault, but he's not as fast and not as good defensively. I'm one of the few who thinks he's got a shot at staying with the big club, maybe as an extra.

Laval Rocket season review: Alex Belzile remains a true leader for the team

“It’s not hard to see why Belzile was the lifeblood of the Rocket. He was a human dynamo who brought intensity each and every shift. Belzile’s ability to bring the physicality to opponents, without crossing any lines drove other teams crazy on most nights, and that often helped to get a threatening Rocket power play on the ice.”

“Belzile’s hands and skating are far better than expected for someone who was an energy-type player upon arriving in Laval. Able to quickly turn his edges to stop and throw defenders out of position, or using his hands to dangle the puck around goaltenders, almost always making him a sure bet in the shootout for the Rocket, he was often a dangerous threat.”

I have him ahead of Weise and Weal.

With Domi back it's between Weal, Dauphin, and Belzille for the 12th forward spot.

I think he'd be better than Weal for sure. Weal speed just isn't NHL level. Weise at least has some speed left, but not much else anymore.

Alex Belzile's road to the pros (nhl.com/canadiens)
“Any time I get to the rink, I'm in my element. I'm immediately in the right mindset to perform. And it all starts with positive energy..”

“It really doesn't take much for a veteran to speak to younger players when they're feeling insecure or nervous. And sometimes, it's very easy to get to the rink and not have much motivation to go out there and give your all. But injecting a positive attitude into the mix tends to fix those problems..”

“I see it (ECHL to AHL) as a passport to improvement. I learned and improved in every single city. Facing adversity at a young age has led to nothing but good things or me."

“I'm not trying to be anyone else. I'm just me. I love helping out, I love being surrounded by people. It's just passion. I get to do what I love in life. It's why I won't ever stop. But every day I get to the arena I've a goal: I'm going to get better."
