Wings fans were begging Stevie to bring him up last year, then when forced to be on the team or hit waivers this year Lalonde either healthied him or buried him on the third line. Since McClellan got here he’s been paired on with Edvinsson on the second pairing and they have been elite, even with AlJo playing on his off-side. What does his next contact look like since he’s playing as a bonafide top 4 D.

Don't think he gets a long term deal. Probably 2 years around 2-3M AAV?

ETA: My guess is Yzerman will give him a substantial upgrade on salary but keep him from walking into UFA to see where he is at the end of that. Should be able to give him something around a 5 year deal after that, if he keeps progressing.

One with a single partial season under his belt. Moser, probably the closest stylistic comparison, signed 2 yrs $3.3M/yr but he had a full 3 seasons of top 4 play on his resume.
Yep. Give him the two years. He bridges the contracts of Holl/Chiarot and you allow the team to get the Edvinsson extension through and then you see whether he's going to be consistently this good and you reward him accordingly with a lot of cap available to you, if you need it.

It almost writes itself the way the contracts lineup, honestly.

ETA: That and Pellikka should be on board either next year or the year after and you can stagger your d-man contracts out really well.

This is silly, do we think he’s a flash in the pan and bridge him and pay for it in 2-3 years? Or do we think he’s legit and lock him up longterm at a reasonable rate?
As a GM you have to be pragmatic and take the cautious route with a guy who, while he is showing well, needs to show that he's going to be this way, consistently, before you give him a long-term deal. It's not like he isn't going to get a large bump in pay. You're just staggering him a bit and paying him really well for no UFA years purchased.

You don’t give term to guys with 20 good games. Not saying he hasn’t looked good but the market for that type of player would be a 2x2 or similar.

Let’s not forget that when Gus Nyquist had as many career games as AlJo does he looked like a perennial 40+ goal scorer who would challenge for Rocket’s. Sample size matters and AlJo needs a far larger one to say he’s a sure fire top 4 long term.

If he's playing as good as you described, he probably holds out for an offer sheet if eligible instead of those lowball 2mil aav bridge deals discussed above.

Teams will look at Broberg and how well that worked out for the blues

This happens all the time...

He'll get 1-2 years under $3M with opportunity to prove he's not a fluke.

You can get away with doing an offer sheet on a team like the Oilers that don't and wont have the cap space to fire back with one of their own.

Not really the case with Detroit.

Hes played like half a season so all depends on how much yzerman and the team believes in him and if johansson wants to risk it and take a shorter term deal to try to get a better deal later

Likely 2.5 x 2 yrs ... I'd try pushing 2.75-3 x3 or if we really believe in him something 3-3.25 x 4

Maybe we can do something crazy like what carolina did with jarvis with johansson(maybe even edvinsson) and defer some money later on to get a lower cap hit i dont know how all that works

Ilitch probably wont touch that

He’s so poised and smart. I’d be willing to gamble and sign him long term. 8 years x 4m per could turn out to be such a steal for Detroit. Even on a 3rd pairing under a 100m+ cap it’s a solid deal.

I don't think it makes sense to give him term, he's played 33 NHL games, and doesn't project to put up offense in the NHL. The proposed bridges probably make sense for both sides, and allows him to drop down to the bottom pair without issue should someone overtake him.

Woefully low. What top 4D make 2.5M on their second contract?

He has played 10 games on the 2nd pair. When the season is over he'll have a 40 game sample size on the 2nd pair at most and like 60 total games.

Im an AlJo fan but a) Yzerman has a history of not rushing this kind of stuff and b) he could easily fall off.

I love your enthusiasm but flat out, he hasn't earned significant long term money.
