OT: Alaskan Malamute Puppy

Thursday evening, I headed on a journey from Saint John, NB to just past Sudbury, ON, to pick up my new baby girl.

We left about 7pm Thursday night and arrived at about 1pm Friday afternoon. There was some weather that slowed us down. We got out puppy and began heading back at 3pm. My wife doesn’t like to drive in new places, so I was covering the whole way back while she supported the puppy. We just got home at 11pm Saturday night. Decided on a motel Friday night as I had been driving for close to 20 hours straight. She is beautiful and worth every minute of it.

Our mix Aussie/pit is getting older. She's gonna be 8 soon and we're hoping she inherited more of the Aussie Shep's longevity as Pits don't last as long. Anyway, we've been brainstorming what our next dog will be and we're undecided. Aussie Shep is still our first choice. I've had a few dogs and the Aussie is just brilliant on another level than other dogs. Still we hesitate. We both love malamutes and long haired akitas, which looks just like a malamute but with golden hair.

Fantastic and congrats! I have a golden retriever named Sunshine. When she was a puppy? She ate the wooden support beams on a barstool in our kitchen. I didn’t notice until I sat on it. The stool collapsed with a cup of coffee in my hand… Keep on eye on her lmao!

If you like a dog that communicates A LOT, they're perfect. They're so quick to learn new words, even at 8 years old she's still picking-up new ones. She has all sorts of ways to communicate. When she really wants something or when we come home, she'll grimace. No kidding. I'm not sure if she's trying to imitate our smile because dogs probably notice our teeth when we smile, but anyway, she purses her lips like a dog that's growling, but without the sounds and agressive behavior. Tail waggling and everything, obviously happy to see us. She can also mumble when she wants something. She'll come around, mumble a bit and then grimace and mumble again. I call her miss-communication when she does this. When she sits next to me and I haven't petted her for awhile, she'll let her displeasure be known by making grouchy sounds. They have highly developed personalities.

Very high maintenance, though. We take her to the dog park almost everyday for an hour and even at her advanced age, she gets restless on the rare days we can't take her out.

She is much better behaved than I expected already. She walks close to me on a leash and every now and then I’ll quickly change direction to make her follow, with a “cmon girl” she comes right away.

She had one accident on the way home about 20 mins before we got home she went pee on a soaker blanket, otherwise, no other accidents in the car and none in the house. She loves her crate, I started by feeding her breakfast in there this morning and ever since she’s been returning on her own. She gathered up most of her toys from the front room and brought them into her crate. I’m exhausted, but I’m so happy with my decision.

Such a cuuutie! Love ‘cold weather’ dogs. Luna was my love, my life. You will not regret this. Very stubborn, heady dogs, but just wonderful beings.

I’ve never owned a dog nor am I inclined to get any pet. I do however greatly appreciate those who care for them and treat them well — posters in this thread are an inspiration as is our favorite forum Swede, @Per Sjoblom who has stopped at nothing to do what’s best for his dogs.

I love meeting aussies but I don’t have the energy to ever own one. Very smart, can run for days, and really want to work. I meet one fairly often and she’s wonderful now that she’s very affectionate as opposed to violently affectionate as a puppy, she would almost attack for snuggles. Sweet but a bit scary back then, her owner has scars. Not a mean dog in any way but she would hug and scratch on meeting. Loving, but sometimes painful.

Sweet dog but needs hours of vigorous exercise daily. I love meeting her, but I wouldn’t be able to meet her needs if I owned her. I have a low maintenance mini poodle that wants a level of activity I can provide.

Beautiful dog, I hope you have lots of time to walk/exercise your dog. Do yourself a favour and get her a big dog bed. Large dogs tend to get hip problems.

She’s a bit timid of strangers. She’s done most of her socializing with other dogs. Today we introduced her to a couple family members and had to give them treats for her to go to them. Eventually she opened up and went to them. It’s going to take a few exposures before she’s completely comfortable.

She’s pretty well behaved already, no accidents today, but I don’t give her a chance to. Every hour I take her out, after every play session I take her out and after every nap I take her out. I can work from home and for the next two weeks she will have my undivided attention.

She’s pretty stubborn, but overall, I can’t complain. She will give in eventually, I have patience for days.
