Post-Game Talk: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Leafs up 2-0! Win 4-3 Game 2

As of today, Bob's goals saved above expected sits at -2.9 in the playoffs. Stolarz is even and Woll a minus .1 in a small sample size. None the less.... if this continues, we are in great shape. A PP goal would really help.
May I ask where you're pulling these numbers from?

Bob's inability to save anything is a huge reason why the Leafs are 2-0 up, but you have to give the Leafs credit too - they've made life miserable for him with traffic and through odd man rushes too

Wes McCauley replaced an injured linesman in the 3rd, hopefully that means he doesn't enter for the rest of the series.

Great win by this group, this coach and team are different. A lot less pressure now in these two Florida games and heavy confidence to come back home no matter what happens. If the Leafs can steal at least one of these two games that's huge.
f*** it let's go get both

Let's not get stupid - we saw in round 1 that after early jitters, Ullmark settled into things.

And Bob is a much better goalie than Ullmark.

Leafs just need to keep plugging away.
It's not about Bob. He may play better, but it won't really matter. Florida still won't be able to create separation from the Leafs, not with the style that Florida plays. Again, it may be a different story against a team like Carolina because of how they play, but Florida's style fits the Leafs well.

MoneyPuck most likely.

Played two of the worst goalies so far.

Stolarz is even, Woll is a slight negative.

They are putting weak shots on him though, he just has been terrible.

Leafs 100% deserved game 1, this game was closer, and having a shakey Bob helped, but it was more of a coin toss.

But I don't think his shakiness is anything more than he has always been streaky and we are catching him at a good time.

He can also steal games, so I am just grateful we are getting this version.

The first goal from Nylander in game 1 and the Tanev goal really stood out as bad, he hasn't been terrible, but he hasn't made any big saves and let in a few soft ones, our goaltending has been better.

Well Steve Valliquette often talks about warming up a goalie with clear sight, unscreened and stoppable shots on volume. The more you pepper the better they feel. I don’t play goal, but I can see this in softball when I get a lot of reps at second base for example you play better, react better, sharpens your engagement. Just an example. But we’re not throwing 50 shots on him and building his confidence. Maybe not by design but a good byproduct of how we play.

I'm not saying that theory is wrong, I am just saying, I think Bob sucking is more to do with Bob sucking sometimes than the Leafs not throwing lazy shots at the net, because they still are doing that.

I thought about it on my drive in, sure Auston Matthews could go towards the net and chase a goal to pad the stats but he seems to be committed to playing a safe defensive game right now. He's up higher so he can get back and stifle other team's offense.

It's going to be more on Marner and Knies to score goals but he needs to cash in on the PP. Maybe that's a spot he can go towards the net?

He had an assist on the game winning goal, he's a pt/game, winning a lot of face offs etc...the ink isn't dry yet, he can still have a big night offensively.

Matthews can still be defensively responsible while putting up numbers. Nobody here asking Matthews to turn into Eric Lindros. We are just asking him to play his game.

He still needs moments of where he's the most dangerous player on the ice. I have still yet to see that

All the criticisms are warranted at this point. He's not Joel Otto. He's a goal scorer first. If he just holds the puck on the offensive zone that itself is a good defensive play

His line was hemmed in way too much last night

Sure. And I think the infrequent, sporadic shots plus catastrophic Florida breakdowns will not help Bob regain his edge in-game as easily.

Next thing to do is catch him physically when he’s coming way out to play the puck. A couple of ooopsies moments waiting to happen there.

Not since 1932. But were they the Pats back then?
No, they were the Leafs back then.

But, good call. I think people think that since they haven't won a 3rd round since 1967 and there were two rounds in the original six era, that there have always been two or fewer rounds. But from 26-27 through 37-38, there were 8-10 teams in the NHL, and unless you were 1st in your division it would take three rounds to win the cup.

This is going to happen though, they aren't playing Pinto's line.

They are winning their matchup, and it isn't pretty, but they are winning it.

They outplayed Barkov in game 1 and got outplayed last game, but they still won both matchups.

Let's see how it goes and plays out.

Gonna just appreciate everything for the time being and root for the boys as hard as I can.
Of course, when the games are on, I rarely say a bad word about Auston.

But on the off days, it's kind of part of talking about hockey on board like this. When he has a breakout game, I'll be the one posting the most exclamation marks.

This is what Kawhi Leonard told the Raptors team in 2019 after they opened the series at home 1-1 against the defending champs, and coach Nurse told them they needed to take one of the next 2 in Golden State to regain home court.

It worked.

I mean there will always be so called lazy shots. I think these kinds of plot diagrams are really only helpful for seeing if a team is getting to slot chances or not, because the shots from distance are so hard to quantify quality. Like, obviously if the goalie sees it all the way it’s probably low percentage most of the time, but if there’s 6 bodies between the shooter and the goal and a big body screen right in front of the goalie, we’re talking a totally different proposition.

Also shot opportunities which follow an east west pass that crosses the centerline of the crease. Plot points don’t tell the story there.

Woll got better as the game went on. Think he’s dialling into the series now and will be cool calm and collected on the road. Keep banking those wins and buy time to see if Stolie can get healthy.
Maybe he even plays so well that we start to question whether Stolie should even go back in when healthy. Dare to dream!

If Stolarz comes back after any Leafs win, or better yet a winning streak, you likely play Woll until you lose. Like if the Leafs were to win the next two and with the break between series Stolarz is healthy, you probably start Woll game 1 and ride the hot hand as long as you can, similar to what EDM is doing. Have to think a Pickard loss goes back to Skinner, but he just keeps winning.
