Post-Game Talk: AHHHHHHH!!!! Leafs win 2-0 Game 6

Amazing how this one is a complete reversal of the Game 5 chart someone posted. Maurice is full of it saying the Leafs were just as good in Game 5 but the Panthers got the bounces. He's just trying to say the right things to not motivate the Leafs. They were crap in that game.
I heard Maurice too, was beyond bizarre to argue that, but I guess he's trying to keep his team focused.

All the D were within 1:30 of ice time.
Not a single forward under 10 minutes.
Only one forward over 20 minutes. (A lot of PK time).

Not sure I've ever seen that even ice time for any blueline, ever.

Maybe Berube's onto something? As I mentioned before, it certainly sends a message to everyone in that locker room that they are really valuable to the team.

For the d-men probably helps keep them alive vs. a relentless forecheck instead of having the stud pairing out their 25+ minutes and eating up most of it.
I give Tre credit there, six guys who can all play any situation, don't need to be sheltered. Best D corp we've had ainec. Given how Florida hammers D men too, it's great we don't have to overplay guys and wear them out.

A few lingering thoughts from last night's game:

Not much has been made of this, but do you know how close Matthews came to having his eye ball poked with that stick? AND THERE WAS NO PENALTY. Nobody on the telecast nor the Leaf bench said anything about the refs missing that high stick. Am I missing something here?

Bob took quite a shot to the back of the head when Bennett shoved him into the post. Why was there no concussion protocol? I mean, if he is concussed, there should be repercussions in goal. The Matthews shot was saveable, perhaps he was out of sorts from that bump.

The Leafs now have a massive opportunity to win this game at home if they just put out the effort they did last night. Next series against Carolina would be tough but winnable and we have home ice against them. Win that and you're in the Stanley Cup Finals. I'll take my chances against anyone who comes out of the West. I hope we see the best effort of the season from the Leafs.

Best game this postseason for this team. Guts, grind, clutch! The Captain came up big when we needed him.

Big difference in how Bonsie called it and how HNiC called it.

Bonsie " how did that happen?"

Simpson "...5 hole, and that's the kind of goal Auston Matthews scores in his sleep!"

Great goal but it wasn't an "in your sleep" kind of goal.

That said thank the hockey gods for this pittance of joy that has been bestowed upon us.

It's hard to imagine that being the same Toronto Maple Leafs that we saw lose 5-1 to the Florida Panthers.

Great defence all game long, disrupting passing plays blocking shots creating turnovers and staying with and finishing your checks.

I had zero anxiety at any point in the game, it just looked like the Leafs threw a blanket on them and held them down up until the final buzzer.

I also loved what Benny did at the end of the game not letting Upchuck get away with his usual nonsense. I also loved that Benny pounded Marchand into the ice with a textbook body check, and I really loved his forecheck on that Luke-like lone Ranger rush up ice allowing the forwards to change and then getting back to help kill the Panther attack.

I called a game 7 in the post game 5 thread.

Nuthin but rainbows and unicorns and a lot of hard work gets this done.

The ESPN announcer I keep hearing in the highlights said "he didn't have much on it". Dunno what he was watching because it looked like an old days Matthews laser to me.

I kinda agree with the ESPN guy. Mrs koho summed it up best when she said "it looked like the goalie was expecting the fastball and got a change-up!

To be fair I think the Dman got a piece of it with the blade of his stick. The puck didn't come out too hard even though it hit the bottom bar at the back of the net.

All that aside, I don't even think SN put up the estimated speed of the shot that they do with some regularity, or at least I didn't see it. Anyone?

True story: I was at Casino Rama about 15-20 years ago (we were really there to see Loverboy - don't judge) and I played craps for the first and only time, I had no idea how to play, just did what the dealer told me to do. I rolled the dice in my hands like that before every roll and called it "The Miagi". At one point, no word of a lie, I had a crowd 4 people deep all around the table. :)

I still have a grudge with Loverboy. Me and some friends were supposed to go see them in Calgary in 1986 and they cancelled the show that night for some reason. That evening instead I was trying to impress a girl and went around a corner too fast and ran my dad's car into a lamp post. It's ALL THEIR FAULT.
I disagree with this and the blaming of Loverboy.

It’s clear you took their anthemic Turn Me Loose too literally and ended up as you did.

In the interim keep watching the Leafs and Lovin’ Every Minute of It…….,

Cheers

I was watching that game like the walking dead and it was very comfortable.

The whole thing felt like sudden death for the Leafs. Let in the first one and it's all over.

But Florida allowing the first, they could still come back.

Scoring so late in the game actually freed Toronto from having to worry about holding a lead. It was just a back and forth muck fest, longer it went the more it sapped Florida.

The forward thing shocks me a bit, Matthews and Marner felt like they were out there a ton last night. Speaks to how well they played, I suppose.

James Tanner would flat out tell you that Holl is better than Carlo
James Tanner might be the biggest idiot that roams God's green earth. He always takes the negative tact when writing about the Leafs. But his attack on the Leafs/management since Dubas was canned borders on obsession. He kind of reminds me of a few Dubasites who linger in this forum spewing bs stats as if they were gospel. If Tanner said Holl is better than Carlo, then you KNOW Carlo is better.
