Post-Game Talk: AHHHHHHH!!!! Leafs win 2-0 Game 6

Okay I get if I'm being a Debbie Downer but anyone else feel like Florida was the better team? Seeing Matthews in his 1st of 2nd post game interview and Berube speak I was just like what? Save a few shifts of chaos we barely sustained offensive zone time while Florida was comfortably controlling the puck in our zone for extended periods and comfortably broke the puck out of their zone repeatedly while the Leafs looked like they were trying to survive long enough until they could counter strike.

I guess they were trying to be positive but I did not see the Leafs have a great game. Florida had several grade a chances they shot a little wide. I liked the intensity but I hope they don't play like this in game 7 and can make the adjustments. Maybe playing at home will help but this game reminded me of the Babcock days when their only method of breakout was chipping it to the neutral zone hoping for an odd man rush.

Quick Hits:

1) That might have been our most complete game of the playoffs.

2) Matthews was on it. From the drop of the puck he was driving play. Likely one of his weaker shots goes in too, he needed something like that.

3) Knies being hurt could pose a problem. I know he never left, but he never looked right after he took that hit.

4) Credit where it's due, Domi was great. He made (at least) three very good to incredible defensive plays, was disciplined, and a good play on the insurance goal.

5) Depth. The bottom two lines were fantastic, made great defensive plays and got that huge insurance goal. We can rag on the big guys all we want, we need that in a big way to win.

6) Woll trending up, that's the most comfortable he's looked to me. Even in his great Game 4 he didn't seem as comfortable as last night... the team too, for that matter.

7) Berube. For everything he got wrong in Game 5, he got right last night. He kept that calm demeanor and you can see it in the team.

8) Game 7 against the champs. You ask for this as a player and as a fan. It's been a great series so far, we've earned being here, now let's end their reign.

Well deserved win. Our top players were better than theirs, our depth was more effective, our goalie was better, our defense was strong. We were the better team last night and I'd be shocked if Paul Maurice doesn't think that too.

I think we have to be aware of the type of game Toronto is trying to play. Berube’s system isn’t always about sustained offensive pressure. It’s about capitalizing on the offensive chances that come and then limiting high danger scoring chances.

Florida may have had more pressure but I can’t think of many high danger scoring opportunities that they got on net. Toronto muffled them, everything was to the outside or point shots, any shots in close were swarmed by Toronto’s d and blocked. I think the leafs are most comfortable playing this way and winning this way. When they start trying to get cute and fancy in the offensive zone is when they actually end up making costly turnovers that lead to odd man rushes the other way. So I think Berube is happy to let other teams have the puck and defend because he trusts his team to make the opposition pay when they make a mistake.

It’s just very different than what we are used to, but if you look at all of Toronto’s wins in the playoffs, when they play that way, they win.

Habs fan here. The leafs and habs rivalry takes a back seat this season. A Canadian team must win the Cup this year!

I love how your team is built. Super stars and role players. Patches & Domi. Gritty, solid D… and still winning with your backup (love his clutchness).

A lot of us are rooting for you. This one feels different. Can’t wait for Sunday!

They do this every year.

Just when you think it can't be done, they do just enough to blow it game 7.
That is why so many of us get so frustrated with this team. We watch them dominate game 1, 2 and half of game 3 then they totally crap the bed culminating in that incredibly lazy disinterested incompetent effort in game 5.
Game 6 they decide to show up and care and put together a text book game.
I realize every game isn’t going to be a Picasso but a consistent effort and turn up the give a shit level woukd go a long way for fan support

FWIW as a neutral fan, the only time Florida clearly dominated was the first half of the 2nd period. They had 9 or 10 shots to Toronto's zero shots, and during that stretch it looked like the Panthers were taking control of the game. But, to their credit, the Leafs held on, killed the Matthews penalty and regained momentum. Toronto had a really strong second half of the game, great PK and backchecking from everyone. They did a great job shutting the Panthers down and fully earned the win.
