After Canada who is the top hockey nation?

C Republic

Russia is not in the top 5 anymore you can't put a country who, as far as the Senior level goes hasn't medaled in anything that mattered since 2002 you just can't.

They have a chance at the 2016 World Cup but if they don't medal there then it is completely justified to put them in z7th or 8th spot ESPICALLY if the under 23 team gets a medal.
 
Russia is far stronger than Finland and Czech Republic. Look to overall strength of players and not results in single eliminations.

WC results aren't complete rubbish, otherwise we'd have Denmark beating Canada. It's strange to have fans of international hockey disregard it as if they don't count at all. With the two mickey mouse teams I'd rather watch the WC's than the World Cup.
 
Defense - Sweden > USA
Forwards - USA > Sweden

I'd say it tips over in Sweden's favor because of goaltending. That's iffy though since it hinges on one single guy. Behind Lundqvist we're pretty garbage.

It's not about quality of hockey, it's about how the teams are created. At the WC you get some teams bringing nearly half of their Olympic rosters, while other teams bring maybe one or two Olympic players. It's not remotely even, which makes legitimate comparison impossible.

As far as the WC vs this World Cup... yep. Joke teams ruin it.

Canada won two in a row, but they played teams from the big5 six times. SIX freaking games..

So I dunno why we should separate them from others.

The vast majority of the best players play in the same league. It is easy to compare them. Canada has the best players, by a sizable gap.

Ohh, I don't think its that easy. If only you think looking at stats does the job. But that`s another topic. ;)

And even if we assume the names play the game.

Sweden has arguably the top3 NHL goalie, six top1 NHL D-mans, and top9 of NHL first liners.

Okay, Canada has more elite-stars. But its not like its Basketball.

Yes they are because the WC takes place at the same time as the playoffs so teams like Canada, USA etc can't send their best rosters, which means it isn't best on best which means it doesn't matter it's nice to win a I guess but it doesn't matter either way

The gap is quite large, and to suggest that it only results from looking at the stats is idiotic. Canada can roll four centres better than Sweden's best, and has better wingers as well. Sweden's top three defencemen are insanely good, but Canada's are basically equal, and then there is better depth. Goaltending is basically equal as long as Lundqvist is healthy. Sweden can beat Canada on any given day, but anyone with a brain can see that at this time Canada has a better team.

People keep sleeping on Finland. Just like the other big teams in best-on-best tournaments and then the Finns keep sneaking in and medalling.

Their 1st center is worst than any other teams 3rd liner center.

Their 1st d-man is worst than Canada`s, USA and Sweden's 6th d-man.

How do they medal 2 years in a row!?

Its must be some kind of a miracle! :help:

Finland is such a sleeper. They produce on the big stage every time they play, especially at the Olympics. Since the '98 Olympics, Finland has won three bronze and one silver, which is the most. While they haven't won a gold, they are a hell of a team and deserve to be 3rd best.

I don't care if it's single elimination, producing every single tournament (minus '02) is a hell of an accomplishment no fluke.

One is arguably the best goal scorer on the planet in Stamkos

One is arguably the best defensive forward in the game in Towes

And JT is one of the top 10 forwards in the NHL
