Confirmed with Link: Afanasyev signed to one year deal

Luongo got his Vancouver contact canceled and signed for less Florida.
That was mutually agreed on. This sounds more like CSKA threatened that if he wanted to stick around he was going to get his contract ripped up so they could cut his pay and instead he decided to come back to North America.

What was his role like on the team? Usually they seem very stacked so players can tend to get little ice time
I don`t watch KHL much, but from what I saw, he played mostly on 3rd line and wasn`t noticeable.

His advanced stats are:
Regular season - 53 GP, 21 (7+14) points, 1 PP goal, +7, 14 PIM, 95 SOG, 13:27 ATOI (1:33 on PP), 58 hits, 28 BS;
PO - 6 GP, 4 (2+2) points, 1 PP goal, -5, 4 PIM, 17 SOG, 16:02 ATOI (2:34 on PP), 1 hit, 2 BS.

As somebody who formerly worked for the federal government, I'll say that if he came back to America assuming that his contract wouldn't be ripped up, he did not come back at a good time :sarcasm:

In a general sense, sure. But the NHLPA wields enough power that it's not going to happen in elite pro hockey unless it's mutually agreed on.

Should've kept Weisblatt.

What's Afanasyev's game? Does he use his size? Could he be an F1 to crash and bang and open up some space for Smith on a low pressure 3rd line that could feast on easy competition?

I do agree though that it tends to make the team commit a little more to the players with the one-way contract but it doesn't mean they can't or won't be sent down. Givani Smith was an example of how the Sharks treated someone with a one-way at this rate. He was kept up for the longest time even without playing much. Was waived and sent down to the Barracuda just before being traded to Colorado. He'll get his shot but the one way won't keep him up but it will likely mean increased odds in being kept up.
Givani was also a situation where there was no reason for him to be in the AHL because he was older and not skilled enough to warrant using a veteran slot down there.

Afanasyev will count towards that AHL veteran number now with 275 games between AHL, KHL, and NHL, but he's still got some skill to tap into unlike Smith who was only ever a face puncher.

The one way thing is mostly just due to the fact that Afanasyev had options to stay in Russia and our AHL team is located in an expensive area. He wasn't coming back to the US on a deal that had a chance to only pay him $150k in the AHL.
