So, Kempe had just 5 goals in 50 games this season playing for a bad MODO team in a "mens" league. But, he had 8 goals in 17 playoff games for the Monarchs in a "mens" league.

My question is.... what was the reason for the increase? I had thought that the AHL is the second best league in the world. :help:

His Euro league numbers better than that. Sweden uses the metric system and each Swedish goal is 2.57 North American goals.

The serious answer: He was on a bad team playing against grown men as a 17 year old

Well, Kings thought he had tools that would translate to the North American ice and game and in a small sample size they look correct. SEL is a low scoring league, too. He went from the worst team in a low-scoring league to the best team in a higher-scoring league and his tools shined in a higher contact, quicker paced setting.

If you ask me the big ice is worse for offense, It actually encourages traps and Five people stacking the goal mouth even more than NA ice.

There is so much ice that, why even try to defend it.

You did the conversion wrong, its multiply by 9/5 and add 32. So he actually had a pretty respectable 41 goal season.

I'd like to see a comparision in ice time and in powerplay time to give a better idea of the situation.

God, this 100%. That's why anytime anyone brings up 'bigger ice' as a solution to scoring I point to how that makes the game even slower. You want the boards? They're yours. I'll be waiting 15 ft away for you to become a dangerous scoring option.

I don't have the charts and graphs handy but I don't recall many of his Manch goals being PP goals, I do remember lots of them being quick strikes off hard work/turnovers. Do remember his WJC goals being absolute snipes off Kopi's usual spot on the PP. He's versatile.

...I know that's a total digression from what you said :) Just trying to fill in the blanks a little. Not sure what his ice time/deployment was like with MODO.

To those wondering, his average ice time in SHL (no longer called SEL btw) was 15:49.

As for his numbers, I don't really know. Maybe his game is better suited for smaller rinks?

Having a center man like Nick Shore helps…

Most of the goals were 5 vs 5. By the time the first unit was done (Mersch-Shore-OB / Weal-Miller), there wasn't that much time remaining or the first unit scored, rendering the 2nd unit somewhat moot. I think Backman and Loverde were the only ones to score on the 2nd PP unit off the top of my head.

I thought Kempe looked great on the big ice at the World Juniors this past winter from the bit I saw. Tied for 2nd on the team with 4G, 4A. Keep in mind in Kopitar's last season with SSK in the same league, he only put up 8 goals in 47 games. His team was relegated as well. Came over to the NHL the next season and put up 61 points in 72 games. Not sure if he was 17 or 18 that year though.

also Myanmar is looking to switch from imperial to metric in the next couple years. just going to be you guys and Liberia... :sarcasm:

So, serious question, based on those similar stats and his handful of games for the Monarchs, does anyone realistically think he can play at the same level as Kopitar?

Your really wrong on that one. AHL is not that high up on the list of best leagues really. It's kinda what happens due to the league being a developmental league.

NHL
KHL
SHL
SM-Liiga
NLA
ALK (Swedish 2nd division)
Then maybe you get AHL in a group with DEL and Czech Extraliga.

No.

Not skilled like Kopitar, doesn't have the Vision of Kopitar either.

I don't. He's definitely seems meaner than Kopi though, which I do like, but as mentioned, his hands aren't quite on the same level. Probably more of a third line center type, but with some offensive upside. Closer to a Pavelski from 3-5 years ago than a Stoll.

He was also taken about a half round later in the draft, and I've always had the impression Kopitar slipped a bit being the first legitimate NHL calibre prospect from a country not known for it's hockey exports. Bit of the "too good to be true" thinking. That might just be me though.

Didn't he play with Shore? That has something to do with it. It's like how Clifford and Nolan got going after being with Shore. He makes other players better around him.

Consider the LEADING scorer on his team had 25 points in 51 games.
MODO only had 3 players with more than 10 goals. Kempe's 17 points
as an 18 year old on MODO was pretty decent. You should more look
at how he played in tournaments against his peers and he did very well.

Also consider he only got in 3 AHL games, prior to the playoffs,
so 8 goals in the playoffs is pretty phenomenal, as an 18 yr old
with virtually no AHL experience. What does that translate to,
going forward? Hard to tell, but looks he could easily be a top
6 LW within a year, capable of 20+ goals. He's already exceeding
expectations, is still 18, and has not really worked with the
Kings epic development team.
