With different previous at adjusting players season, the latest attempt has been the following with those goals:
1) Only use the top players in the league to automatically adjust for scoring distribution change over time, if rules change, style of play, power play habit make scoring more frequent for top 6 or bottom 6 looking only at the top players instead of a league wide average like hockey reference should take care of this.
2) Large enough sample size to not have large noise from outlier
3) Has constant level of talent over time has possible.
So the "strength" of a season someone points were compared too was calculated using the average points scored that year by the top X Canadians player that season, with X being a number of player calculated using a ratio of how many young Canadians (aged 20-34) there was at the time.
It was calibrated to have at a maximum 18 of them during the 06 (1966-1967 when there was 1.893 millions hockey age male in Canada) and seasons before 1926-1927 were dropped out.
The average number of points was pro rated into 82 games, game missed by player here are lost completely, Mario 160 points season in 92-93 is a 160 points in a 84 games season, Gordie Howe big season occured in a 70 games season, there points total will be pro-rated into 82 games with 82/84*160 for Mario and 82/70*95 for Howe.
