Price is tempting for the Canes because it would solve their perpetual issue in net, but I don't know how much he'd be helping at age 39.

They'd probably take Kucherov here.

And - a team like Tampa, Ovechkin can work too

Did not think about that one because possible redundancy with Stamkos on that powerplay position (and Stamkos not easy to move with that contract and already on the best team for him), but that true that they have a why not try to be a super long window super team that is possible.

I think he remove the higher chance to resign someone already there element, yes Seattle is not crazy.

1. Crosby for 3
2. Kucherov for 2

The term really makes a difference.

McDavid = 1 year isn't worth more than multiple years of Crosby and Kucherov

Ovechkin = I feel he's more of an elite complimentary player these days, rather than a cornerstone like Crosby/Kucherov/McDavid

Price = too much of a risk with his age and injury

Fun poll.

Round, approximate numbers, I'd value them something like this if I was just signing these contracts as UFAs:

Connor McDavid - $16-18M per year, x 1 year = surplus value of $16-18M.
- He might actually be worth upwards of $20M for a 150 point season in what may be the peak of his career right now at 24.

Nikita Kucherov - $11-12M per year, x 2 years = surplus value of $22-24M.
- I think that's the right market value for one of, if not the best winger(s) in the game at ages 28 and 29.

Sidney Crosby - $10M + $9M + $7.5M in his age 34, 35 and 36 seasons = surplus value of $26.5M
- That third season makes a big difference, and I'm probably projecting too quick of a decline. He might be a $10M player for all three years (or at least above that for the first half to make up for falling below that on the back half).

Alexander Ovechkin - $7M + $6M + $5M, +$4M in his age 36, 37, 38 and 39 year old seasons = surplus value of $22M
- Is Ovechkin currently a $7M winger? I don't know. I'm essentially plugging in that he's going to score at a pace of 35, 30, 25 and then 20 goals over the next 4 years at $500k per goal. That feels close.

Carey Price - $5M + $4M + $3M + $2.5M + $2M in his 34, 35, 36, 37, and 38 year old seasons = surplus value of $16.5M
- Above average starter, below average starter, veteran tandem goalie, capable backup, low end, high pedigree backup. That seems like a fair trajectory?

Now, time value of money makes a huge difference and I'm not accounting for that in the above values. That's also ignoring context. I wouldn't take Price over McDavid or Ovechkin or Kucherov unless very specific situations with the team made sense. For example, Colorado with questions in net and a young core that should have a long contention window maybe considers 5 years of runs with Price over adding McDavid for just one year. Or a team like Ottawa taking 4 years of Ovechkin over 2 of Kucherov because neither addition gets them to a Cup in the next 2 years, but having Ovi for free in year 4 when the team is ideally ready to contend could be a key difference. The other end is maybe a team like Tampa that would take McDavid over a second Kucherov or Crosby to effectively lock-in a three-peat, or Vegas, who need that game breaking talent and want to win quickly for their aging owner.

For most teams in the middle of the league though, I think Crosby for three years is the right pick.
