Player Discussion Adam Fox

I almost expect the rangers to sign Gavrikov to play with Fox. Big guy, minute eater, good defensively. Can be the Ekholm to Fox's Bouchard. Kandre and Soucy will be moved imo.

Soucy/Fox had almost the same numbers as Miller/Fox yet people think Soucy/Fox is horrible and Miller/Fox is great. And yet, Miller/Fox largely was used in situations for offense whereas Soucy/Fox was used normally.
We need to use stats as a tool but not a bible. My memory is not great but I think I remember a game where KAM and Fox were reunited and then seemed to be on the ice for 3-4 goals in that game before being split.

The perfect Fox partner is Ryan McDonagh. great positionally and can really skate to cover up mistakes. Would love to brng him back or add someone like him.

The problem is not using stats. The problem is seeking stats that support preconceived notions and not understanding context and not be willing to admit the preconceived notions were wrong.

For example, the immediate reaction of "Soucy is terrible" which was largely given because people don't like him since he's big and slow, was a healthy scratch a couple of times in Vancouver this year, and the charts this year said he was bad.

Yet when I looked into it and saw that despite all of that, almost every year of his career his goal suppression numbers were elite and not a single person has ever been able to satisfactorily answer the question of "If he is so bad, why are goal rates against with him on the ice often so low?" Additionally, they still say he is terrible despite all his advanced stats with the Rangers being great because they decided that ahead of time he is bad. And maybe he is. The sample on that isn't large enough (250 mins as a Ranger). But you can bet if a player on another team had a 54 CF%, 53 GF%, and 53 xG%, even in a small sample, people here would be saying that is exactly the type of guy we need to bring in to help the defense.

Honestly amazed by McD. I really thought he was cooked when we traded him. It looked like injuries were catching up to him and it was the beginning of the end.

Always loved him as a ranger and happy he had success after.

Gorton's worst move was trading him and there were many contenders for that crown. great leader and player. Shouldve kept him through the rebuild and hed still be captain today

I agree about confirmation bias. I'm not against using stats. I think stats are very useful. I just do not believe in living and dying with stats alone. Years ago some stats only guys on this board spoke about Brandon Pirri like he was the next Mike Bossy. They also loved Adam Clendening. Sometimes we have to use more than stats when looking at players, lines or pairings imo.

Way more interested in buying a few cheap(er) years of McDonagh than paying through the nose for Gavrikov.
