Player Discussion Adam Fox

We're talking about body language again? What f***ing mood do you expect them to be in having a season like this?

Despite all the country club memes on here, I can assure you that the vast majority of them care deeply about it.
Body language on a team especially from a leader can be very important as can words. I have no doubt he cares.

fox isn't as slow as people like to complain about but he's never going to be as fast as people want no matter how much he trains

be realistic
Having a great motor can make up for a lack of quickness. Ive been outworked by slower guys. This is Fox and Laffys career. Its their job. We just want them do be at their best. Ditto every other guy on the team. If our guys can honestly say they are in the best shape of their lives and giving 100% as often as possible that is all any fan can ask for.

Would love to send Fox and Laf to fitness/speed skating camp this summer. You look at all of the top dmen in the league he is just amazing slow.
That would be great so they could push each other. Maybe add a few more guys as well. Im sure they are competitive deep down.

Chuckles in Rizzo/Verdugo
Rizzo got brain damage so that's not really fair.

Verdugo has an 11.9 career WAR. He's been above replacement level every season as a full-time player. The median 4th liner in the NHL is below replacement level. His career OPS is above average and he's a good defender.

There's nobody playing in MLB who's bad at everything and sticks around like Scott Laughton or whatever.

Would you prefer he be happy when the team gives up a goal? Who really cares. Hank had horrible body language too constantly yelling at his dmen when he gave up a goal. Big deal.

Yelling in frustration or as motivation is 180° different than neck snapping, shoulder dropping, eye rolling, frowning, and moping.

If you dont understand the nuanced difference sit the arguement out.

One "can be" motivational within the right ecosystem. The other certainly is demotivational and spreads like cancer.

Fox constantly does it mid play. That's the issue I have. His focus seems first to throw his hands, head up over getting back into position or what have you.

Everything in moderation. Slaming a stick once in a while is fine. A coaching going off once in a while is fine. If a player or coach overdoes it then the enviorment becomes overally negative. This is still a game. If its depressing to be around then its no longer fun and hard to be near your best. Lead by example. If you have to chew someone out occasionally that is fine but the overwhelming amount of leadership should come from bringing your guys up not down.

I highly doubt players that have dedicated their life to hockey and are good enough to play in the NHL will get demoralized because their teammate shrugs his shoulders, looks up to the sky, and has bad body language after a goal is scored against them.

Players are human at every level. While I never played professionally I did play at every other level including against some future or past pros. I won't say Fox has gotten to that point but players can drag down their team with their negativity if it becomes too much. Even a former player has commented that he told JT to take it easy with Peterson before their issues became public. I do think the negative body language can be contagious on a team and Fox was not the only Ranger doing it. Its no different than going inbto a negative office. You don't want to dread going in to an office and you want to have fun playing this game. I'm not bashing Fox. I actually felt he was showing some good signs lately.

Yeah that's what we need, to fight more. You figured it out.
Fighting for the sake of fighting and fighting for the space /standing your ground/pushing back are two different beasts.....a shame you never figured that out by now ! You also could have finished reading the rest of the post instead of stopping at "scraps" !!!

A relationship is a relationship. I know if my spouse started showing negative body language, it would affect me. Even though I've been with them for many years and know their quirks, it still has an effect. I'm dissecting it too much at this point, haha.

Actually a great reply. Puts things in to perspective.

While it's always great putting points on the board, context in scoring matters as well. 7 of his 8 goals have come against teams out of the playoffs and mostly bottom feeders. Still, you take what you can get I suppose.
But lighting up georgiev is certainly an accomplishment

When you say, “players can drag down their team with their negativity,” is it possible you’re projecting or assuming a bit here in terms of his teammate’s perceptions?

We are not seeing how any of these guys interact on or off the ice. Players might have a stellar relationship with a player and not care at all what he’s doing in terms of gestures. They could also hate a player, in spite of said player doing all the “right” gesturing on the ice.

Truth is, none of us are privy to the interactions that determine any of that.

Moreover, I think the whole gestures thing is being vastly inflated.

I captained in multiple sports and managed something like 600+ people. I don’t say that to suggest my opinion has more weight than anyone else. I say it simply because I’ve observed that people can be highly weird, ritualistic, superstitious and idiosyncratic.

As such - whether as teammate, manager, or captain - I never worried about people’s “oddities” or rituals: I only worried that they legit tried and/or produced.

I was speaking in general not specifically about Fox. I have played, coached, reffed, and even owned a rink for around 5 years. I have seen a lot but I would never assume I know how guys in the NYR locker room feel about anything. I will say that I believe positivity can be contagious on teams as can negativity. I like Fox and I want him to succeed. The better he is the better for the team and the fans.

Fair enough. If it was the rink in Katonah, I hope you fixed that crap ice drop down along the boards.

I am curious also to know how the reffing experience was. That certainly has to give you a different spin on the game.

I was a pretty good ref. I had players request that I do their games often. With that said we all make mistakes and I screwed up really badly once. There was a penalty and I raised my arm for a delayed call when the wrong team had possession of the puck so the wrong team pulled their goalie lol 😂☺️😭
