Confirmed with Link: Adam Foote Named Head Coach of the Vancouver Canucks

That wasn’t the question though. It was pretty clearly targeted at the impact it would have on his ability to do the role. I don’t think it is a great question - everyone is dealing with personal stuff all the time while doing their jobs - but I think it is a fair one.
I mean divorces affect people too, does that mean it’s ok for the media to ask? There needs to be a line drawn somewhere.

Also what’s the point of the question, does anyone expect Foote to be like, oh you are right, this actually affects me a lot, never mind I am out.

I think its a question that has to be asked in some way shape or form. Its an ugly question, but one that can't go ignored. From what I have seen as I have not had a chance to really watch the interview or listen to it, I think it was handled well.

Idgaf they should be doing everything to try and keep Hughes.

Get three top six forwards this summer and announce a practice facility plan and that’s all that matters

Per Allvin and Foote, they didn't even consult Hughes. "It's about the team".

This "do if for Hughes or else he'll join his brothers" thing is a Rutherford joke.

Is Foote the ideal candidate? I don't know, but the players seem to like and respect him as a coach, there's no disputing the great work he did with the D and PK, and from a continuity standpoint, particularly with the D, it does make sense. Malhotra would have also made sense.

Now we'll wait to see who the assistants will be, and hopefully there's one who can push the offensive side of things. Brad Shaw returning for the D might be a good add too.

handled fairly well by everyone.

the only fumble is the question to foote was too leading, so the necessary quote didn’t come out of it.

thinking like a journalist, if you are writing an article on the new coach, you want to address all of the questions on people’s minds, within reason. the unreasonable question on everyone’s mind is foote’s attitude towards the charges/trial/incident. the reasonable question on everyone’s mind is will it affect his performance. especially on this team, the last thing they need is more drama.

but the question posed to foote, while respectful and not crossing any lines, was too leading. he was asked if he had any thoughts given everything going on with the trial that maybe it wasn’t quite the right time to take on a job of this capacity. what he should have been asked is whether it would be a distraction, or something to that effect. the sentence you want to have in your article is something like “Addressing the 2018 Hockey Canada trial, of which his son Cal is a defendant, Foote assuages concerns that it will be a distraction. ‘I have a 25 year track record of keeping my home life and professional life separate,’ he says.” but the much less useful quote they actually got was something like “I love coaching hockey and I never considered not taking this job [because of the trial]."

The goal of a head coach should be to make his players as successful as possible.

Tocchet clearly wanted all his players playing the same way - tough physical, grinding hockey.

A good coach, like Crawford, puts his players in the best position to succeed - i.e. Zone starts and line matching.

A HOF guy like Scotty Bowman designed a system for each of their players. Larionov and Kozlov don’t play like Yzerman and Shanahan so they allow the lines play differently and adjusted their usage to suit.

Also, in game adjustments are huge also, what do they see and can they make the adjustments to beat it?

I wonder how Adam Foote will end up but in my mind, he is more of a Tocchet while Maholtra had the ability to be more like a Crawford of maybe even a Bowman. Hope Foote proves me wrong and finds his inner Bowman.

It’s not uncommon for sports people to be asked about the effect of things going on in their personal life on their job. Boeser has been asked about his dad, Myers has talked about his son, players get asked questions that are basically about their mental health all the time, etc.

If the question were “can you believe what your son is accused of doing” or “can you comment on your son’s trial, or if Foote starts getting asked about it all the time, I’d agree it was going too far.

But to get a pointed “there’s something major and public going on in your personal life - did it affect your decision?” isn’t really that.

I agree with your last point which is why I’m not sure it’s a good question, but it’s not an unfair one.

disagree hard, Cal is his own person and an adult. Whatever that is happening with him has nothing to do with Adam and the context of what this media thing is about.

Yup, I couldn't agree more. Absolutely nothing to do with the Canucks, NHL hockey., or this coaching job. What an awful question to ask. Might as well ask about his wife's medical history and how big his pecker is. My gawd Vancouver media is the absolute worst.

Only people with questionable character want to see this question asked and try to drag Adam through the mud for no good reason. With how horrible social media is there is a fairly large number of people that just like to witch hunt people and shame them to no end. It's an ugly human trait.

I think it's a really stupid question. Similar value to do you like hockey, just with disgusting intent. What's he going say, yeah you're right I quit, and then walk off the stage.

It would be hilarious if it actually came down to $$$.

If management expects things to go south, or is worried it might, a guy making $1.4m x 3 getting fired is going to suit Aqua more than a guy making $5m x 5.

It's kind of "icky" and awkward but I agree that the topic should be on the table to some degree...I mean it does have the potential to affect his employment with the Canucks if he has to take any kind of leave from the team to support his son during this case, as unlikely as it might be.

Better to ask it now and get it out of the way than have it hanging over every interview waiting for it to get dropped into the questions.

anyone upset that Foote was asked a very obvious and reasonable is nuts. the good news is Foote himself doesn't appear to be nuts

It is funny how everyone (myself included) assumes Foote needs help to coach offence.

Tocchet and Jacques Lemaire are two of the best offensive players to have decently long coaching careers and both were heavily defensively oriented.

Maybe Foote is an offensive savant?

Tbf i don't know if he even has a systemif his own yet. His time so far seems better described as defensive skills coach than tactical coach.

These questions are going to come with regularity. It is a major story and Foote will be in front of the media on a consistent basis.

The Canucks would have been wise to avoid this.
Why do some fans give our dogshit media this much power? It's the tail wagging the dog.

"Well, our media creates drama out of nothing so the team better avoid something the media can distort".

Or they can shut out the outside noise.

Our media's lack of sources on anything behind the scenes is hilarious and clearly puts them into conniptions.

Hence 90% of them just manufacture interpersonal drama, and then you have a guy like Dhaliwal who has some 'inside' info but is literally a complete shill for agents.

Again, why give this powerless group any more gravitas than they have earned?

Brad Shaw would be a perfect assistant coach hire for Foote. Not sure he’ll take it as he’ll probably land a head coach gig.

Then again Nick Kypreos is as reliable as a rural Albertan.
Puts him in the Scott Arniel realm of coach salaries, if true.

Not sure if it came down to term, but it does make you think if Aqua cheaping out on an internal hire instead of a more established coach.

Well you could ignore the elephant in the room. But that usually ends up being more awkward in the long run. Cause it’s hard to ignore an elephant in the room. It’s pretty big

I can't quite pinpoint why, but the way Foote talks is giving me slight JB vibes. Might just be Benning PTSD.

We won't know much about this hire until we see the team on the ice. Hope he does well.

I'm really surprised by the negative replies here...

Just kidding, these boards are like a misery support group who can find the dark clouds on any sunny day.

My first impression is that I would have preferred Manny Malhotra, but as @Vector noted, none of us know what's going in in the dressing room so it's all 'vibes' based takes from people who are doomers.

I think the Canucks have had simp energy towards Hughes, or at least it's been represented that way by fans and the media.

He's obviously got a brilliant hockey mind (Hughes does), so if they're leaning on that expertise that's one thing.

But if it's 'notice me senpai' energy then it just comes across as cloying and pathetic.

But again, Hughes is a brilliant hockey mind and a thoughtful person and he has said that Foote is the greatest coach he has ever had.

I don't hate this move at all. Instinctively I thought like others that he may not be the best hire to get Petey feeling more renewed, but how do we know?

We know that Tocchet was a MAGA and thought Miller was the cat's ass, but we don't know anything of the sort about Foote.

Quinn Hughes doesn't strike me as someone who's easily fooled by hockey sophistry, and we know Foote's incredible hockey resume as a player, and the incredible hockey minds he's played with.

How about we give this a chance before we have our conniptions...there I go again, it's like I forget that I'm encroaching on the doomer support group forum.
Why are you constantly going on about negativity? IIRC you did this during the Benning era as well and pretty obviously, in hindsight and generally speaking, no one was being unreasonably negative then. And like, what’s the point? Calling posters’ views negative is a conclusion in the premise. And moreover, it’s largely just a semantics / subjectivity thing: you may think people are unreasonably negative and they probably think you are unreasonably positive. So, like, who cares? Why not just abandon this constant complaining about negativity and just focus on the actual issues or things being debated? And I’m not trying to personally attack you or anything, I just don’t think claiming things are negative over and over again is very productive for anyone.

I had the same thought earlier today and checked to see his status. He’s still under contract with the Flyers and they haven’t said anything about his future yet.

Random (and very incomplete) list of former head coaches who are not employed with NHL teams

Drew Bannister
Bob Boughner (Foote's teammate in the OHL and Colorado)
Dan Bylsma
Greg Cronin
Don Granato (brother of Cammi)
Tony Granato (brother of Cammi, coached Foote in Colorado)
Dave Hakstol
Derek Lalonde
Brad Larsen (BC boy, Foote teammate in Colorado) -- working with Calgary but he might be willing to consider a lateral move here
Luke Richardson (Foote teammate in 2006)
Joe Sacco (coached Foote in Colorado) -- technically still employed by Boston
John Tortorella (lol)
Jay Woodcroft

i like brad shaw but his thing is running the defense. i dunno he'd be a good fit with foote

mike yeo makes a lot more sense but i think he's pretty happy in ottawa

they're the only two guys i can think of who make it their career to be "associate" coaches. i guess jack capuano kinda is too but i don't think he's leaving minny. glenn gulutzan in edmonton maybe?
