Confirmed with Link: Adam Foote Named Head Coach of the Vancouver Canucks

As outlined in the latest Foote interview, Allvin approached him months ago if he was ready to be a head coach in the NHL and Foote said he needs a bit more time.
So Allvin approached Foote before Tocchet decided to leave? Was it before they attempted to negotiate an extension with Tocchet in earnest? I wonder if Foote was Allvin's choice all along but Rutherford had other ideas.

Do you think Foote and Allvin would have made an agreement if Foote said he's not ready?
I think if there is a desire to promote internally it doesn't matter what Foote says. If Allvin thinks he's ready and Foote thinks he can handle the job under the right circumstances (e.g. experienced assistant with NHL head coaching experience) then what is Foote going to do? Turn down the rare opportunity?

Of course Farhan is going to ask such a Pejorative Slured question about Cal

I do think it's a fair question to ask even if it's purely so the parts of the fanbase that are upset about the connection to Foote can at least say that the team was asked.

I thought the way he asked the question was cringeworthy. If he had to ask it at all, it could have been phrased a lot differently:

something like "everybody has difficult family situations they're dealing with, some more distracting than others. Did those potential distractions weigh into the process or your decision?"

That way he lets Foote decide how much personal detail is presented.

disagree hard, Cal is his own person and an adult. Whatever that is happening with him has nothing to do with Adam and the context of what this media thing is about.

I don't understand what the last part of this post is supposed to mean.

well this is a media presentation to present the new coach. i think these events are usually about .. why this coach, and the coach talking about the direction.

Whatever that is happening with Cal is personal and should be completely off limits considering how it has nothing to do with the whole media presentation.

A fundamental part of the media's job is to ask hard questions that fans want get answers to. You may not like it but there is a portion of the fanbase that want the Canucks to answer questions around hiring Adam Foote while the sexual assault trial that involves his son is going on. I think it's a fair question to ask even if I don't think it's relevant to Adam.

i didn’t think the cal foote questions were out of line at all

the first one was directed to management, who were asked if the controversy was a consideration at all in making the hire. a reasonable question about the brand.

the second one began with, i’m not asking you to talk about the trial, and asked how it was affecting his ability to do the job. it wasn’t phrased perfectly, because it offered that it might not have been the best time to take the job with all this going on, which is a response you fish for, not offer up front, but the substance of the question is fair game. any NHL coach being hired while his kid’s trial is front page news has to be asked how it affects him doing the job, even though 99.99% of the time he’s going to say they are separate and it won’t. nothing whatsoever was asked about the trial itself or any morality or did they/didn’t they. if anything, the media was surprisingly good about respecting that line.

but also, afaik foote has been given a total pass on this by the media up to this point (maybe the team has also been shielding him from speaking to the press while he was an assistant, i haven’t really noticed him giving much of any quotes tbh). as a fan and observer i certainly have been wanting to hear from him about it so yeah it would be bonkers if it wasn’t asked.

Not surprised it’s from Farhan, he is a l-wing lunatic and caters to that deranged audience.

It's kind of "icky" and awkward but I agree that the topic should be on the table to some degree...I mean it does have the potential to affect his employment with the Canucks if he has to take any kind of leave from the team to support his son during this case, as unlikely as it might be.

It's smart on Allvin to get ahead and start looking for options, means he can read the room well. I think a lot of people noticed a shift in Tocchett the way he started doing his interviews where he was talking more detached about the team.

You can make a point without making yourself look like a deranged idiot in the process.

Certain portions of the audience want answers to questions, especially when the coach we just hired is directly related to someone accussed of sexual assault in an ongoing, relatively public trial. It's the medias job to ask these kinds of questions, even if we might not like the way they did it.

I thought the way Alvin and Foote answered the question was exactly as they should.

This has always been Farhan's game, he's a shit disturber. First thing he said about Tocchett is how him and Miller politically align. You can ignore these things if you want but the reality is that he has ill intention behind his questions.

Idgaf they should be doing everything to try and keep Hughes.

Get three top six forwards this summer and announce a practice facility plan and that’s all that matters

"how you feel about your son being in a sexual harassment trial" is one of those, none of your f***ing business even if fans are interested.
it has nothing to do with his expertise, his organization or really anything other than he is the father.

I think it's a fair question only if you are have zero journalistic integrity and is the sports version of a TMZ reporter.

If you want the full answer:

“Petey and I had some pretty good discussions this year. I really think he wants it. I really think he knows what he has to do, and he's going to dial in, and he's got a great group around him, supporting him and being a team for him, and I'm going to make sure that I have that conversation with him and we continue that relationship, and I support him. For Petey, just for him moving forward, I think that support for him will really get him in a good place, and we're going to make sure that he understands that we're there for him, and we'll do whatever it takes and have a great relationship.”
-Adam Foote on Elias Pettersson

Thanks for this. I think that is actually a really good answer. gives me some hope.

Goaltending (Foote)
  • Are very fortunate to have Demko and Lankinen
  • Liked how they handled the workload at the end of the year
  • Foote had 5 surgeries in a 2 year span during his playing days and will call Demko to talk with him
  • Going to use the medical knowledge they have to utilize the goalies in the right way
//
Thank goodness they are at least saying the right things about goaltending

One of Foote's biggest tests will be - no, not weight-bearing computed tomography - no, it will be whether he can out-coach the opposing team while managing minutes in an 82 game regular season with one of the toughest travel schedules in the league, rather than simply stacking up the TOI of his star players and wrecking them by about three quarters thru the season

The sins of the son are to be laid upon the father

I find it a little perplexing that seeking an endorphin high is now called a legitimate right to the endorphin generating news.
Have we really gone there? I guess the answer is yes. It used to be that people obsessed with the National Enquirer were the exception.

It is funny how everyone (myself included) assumes Foote needs help to coach offence.

Tocchet and Jacques Lemaire are two of the best offensive players to have decently long coaching careers and both were heavily defensively oriented.

Maybe Foote is an offensive savant?

Spot on. There are a lot of people here that haven't even played hockey that have no clue what they're trying to evaluate.

Just because a player's body or mind will only allow then to play or be successful by playing a certain way doesn't mean that's what's in their mind or depicts how they see the game. That's why so many mediocre players make good coaches. Similarly that's why it's wrong to assume a defensive genius in his playing days can only coach that way. He played a major role on one of the best offensive teams of all time. Also wrong to assume because he's a stone-face that he's some moron or something.

It's lame and short-sighted and just simply wrong. People have no clue what Foote thinks about offence because he did all the defending while the Avs won the cup. However, he also played huge important moments and knew how to chip in timely offence as well. No one knows what will be, we'll all have to wait and see but in the meantime people will spout off nonsense like they have a clue about any of it. We do know our defence performed well under his direction.

unfortunately to say the least that when you type in “foote” and “hockey” into news.google.com right now, our coaching hire is not the first story that comes up

but man,

steve moore/bertuzzi

the 2018 wjc team canada

2024–25 canucks

foote is like the forrest gump of shit going off the rails

that said, i’m not going to doomsay this, and hold out for a good outcome here. foote certainly has done some good work in his role here.

feels like a frankie decision not a moleman one, but one hopes that if this crashes and burns foote can get tossed for manny in short order at the end of the season and the inevitable new coach bump and good vibes convinces quinn to extend.

probably the dumbest post ive ever seen on hfboards congrats

That wasn’t the question though. It was pretty clearly targeted at the impact it would have on his ability to do the role. I don’t think it is a great question - everyone is dealing with personal stuff all the time while doing their jobs - but I think it is a fair one.
