Confirmed with Link: Adam Foote Named Head Coach of the Vancouver Canucks

"Kyper thinks Foote is making 1.2-1.4 mill/yr." - Taj

It would be hilarious if it actually came down to $$$.

Then again Nick Kypreos is as reliable as a rural Albertan.

So even Foote thinks hes not ready? That's a good sign

1) That's not what was said in the post.
2) In his interview, Foote says that at the beginning of the year Allvin asked Foote about being a head coach one day and Foote said he's not quite ready but getting there. Asked again near the end of the year and Foote said he now feels like he could be a head coach and it's something he'd like to pursue.

Thank you for clarifying what was said.

unfortunately to say the least that when you type in “foote” and “hockey” into news.google.com right now, our coaching hire is not the first story that comes up

but man,

steve moore/bertuzzi

the 2018 wjc team canada

2024–25 canucks

foote is like the forrest gump of shit going off the rails

that said, i’m not going to doomsay this, and hold out for a good outcome here. foote certainly has done some good work in his role here.

feels like a frankie decision not a moleman one, but one hopes that if this crashes and burns foote can get tossed for manny in short order at the end of the season and the inevitable new coach bump and good vibes convinces quinn to extend.

  • Foote is there to maintain a sense of stability - this is important to keep Hughes happy and fight back against our reputation as an unstable franchise. I have a strong feeling they will promote Manny as their choice for assistant coach (Foote gets to round out the rest of his staff) and have him as that new voice to bring about some change. I think this is the best case scenario for us at this point , even if it really should have been the other way around with Manny having the title as head coach. Of course, this leaves another hole at the AHL level.

Manny has a ton of assistant coaching experience. He came to the organization to be an AHL head coach in order to build out his resume. I don't know how long his contract runs for but he'll be looking to leave the organization as soon as he gets a shot at a head coach position.

eh

not that surprising since so many personnel decisions were made with tocchet hockey in mind. it would have been much worse to hire an outsider, who ends up hating hronek or something for not playing how he'd want his defensemen to play. the team cannot afford any lack of cohesion on any fronts over the next couple years, and this is seemingly the lowest risk way to ensure that happens. the comment in this thread earlier on foote knowing the locker room dynamics at play and how to proceed from there is what i think gave him the real leg up over all external candidates, including manny.

with that said, similar to what i said about naming manny as the head coach, i'd like to see foote paired with an experienced (former head) coach that has deployed strong offensive systems before. i don't particularly have a thought for who that is, but hell, maybe it's foote's former coach, marc crawford. or maybe it's manny's former coach, alain vigneault. point being, with a rookie head coach with no real hc experience, i'd like to see an older guy that is clearly past seeking out that role (so as to not undermine or be a look over your shoulder type threat to foote). if foote really is a third of what tocchet cost, they should be willing to allocate a big dollar figure to get that guy. and it shouldn't be malhotra.

wish manny the best, but he doesn't feel like he's a can't miss / the next jon cooper... yet.

as for hughes' approval... eh, it can work. it seems to be working with knoblauch being hand picked by mcdavid. hughes tnt comments made it seem like foote was the behind the scenes manager while tocchet was more the emotional lead of the coaching staff, and given the amount of emotion from the last couple seasons, i'm fine with keeping the cooler head. i also don't think this was quinn saying hire this guy or else... i think it's moreso that he made public comments calling foote the best coach he's ever had, and it's certainly worth keeping that in consideration vs also letting that coach go to philly.

I don't like that answer about EP (seems more of the same), but I guess we'll see.
If you want the full answer:

“Petey and I had some pretty good discussions this year. I really think he wants it. I really think he knows what he has to do, and he's going to dial in, and he's got a great group around him, supporting him and being a team for him, and I'm going to make sure that I have that conversation with him and we continue that relationship, and I support him. For Petey, just for him moving forward, I think that support for him will really get him in a good place, and we're going to make sure that he understands that we're there for him, and we'll do whatever it takes and have a great relationship.”

Thanks! Can't listen at work right now. Seems the context is focussed more on the relationship vs the actual on ice aspect.

Coaching Search (Allvin)
  • Started the processing for finding a new head coach right after Tocchet informed the team of his decision
  • Interviewed former head coaches, assistant coaches, and up & coming coaches and the deeper they got into the process, Allvin felt that Foote was the choice to lead the franchise
  • Foote has built relationships with the players and staff
  • Foote’s pedigree as a player speaks for itself
  • The way Foote has worked with the players over the last 2-½ years is something they felt will continue to be embraced
Adam Foote, Head Coach (Foote)
  • Looking forward to this new challenge and chapter
  • When he was with the Avalanche, used to get beat up pretty bad by the fans and even though the Avalanche would win a lot of those games, people in Vancouver thanked him for helping win a gold medal for Canada
  • Has loved coaching here
Already Having a Relationship with the Organization (Foote)
  • Is an advantage; has had 2-½ years to develop good relationships
Coaching Staff (Foote)
  • Has really liked the guys he’s worked with in Vancouver
  • Will have to add a couple more coaches to the staff
  • Will have a discussion about what coaches to bring in but have some pretty good ideas of who they want
Quinn Hughes (Foote)
  • Has a healthy relationship with him
  • When you play at this level, there’s tremendous pressure and you want to put great leadership around them
  • Foote is closer to the defencemen, since he was their coach
  • Did not talk to Hughes during this process
  • Talked to him this morning and had some great laughs
Coaching in the WHL (Foote)
  • Has been lucky to coach at different levels
  • Was a great experience but didn’t end the way he wanted
  • Has learned and grown a lot since then
  • Wouldn’t be sitting here today without that experience
Goaltending (Foote)
  • Are very fortunate to have Demko and Lankinen
  • Liked how they handled the workload at the end of the year
  • Foote had 5 surgeries in a 2 year span during his playing days and will call Demko to talk with him
  • Going to use the medical knowledge they have to utilize the goalies in the right way
Assistant Coach’s with Experience (Foote)
  • Would like an experienced head coach but also wants the best coaches; if the staff believes that the guy they want doesn’t have previous head coaching experience, that won’t stop them
  • In a perfect, want an experienced coach with them
How Much Did Hughes’ Opinion Matter? (Allvin)
  • Hasn’t spoken to Hughes during this process
  • It’s not about one player but the entire team
  • The trust and relationship Foote and Hughes have is important
Growing as a Coach (Foote)
  • Wouldn’t be here without Tocchet
  • Turned down some positions after he retired because he wanted to be around his family
  • Worked with the Avalanche for a couple of years as an assistant; did a lot of player development
  • Worked with different age groups
  • WHL was fantastic for him; was different than when he played junior; learned the most from coaching there
  • Wasn’t sure if he wanted to be a head coach when he took the assistant position with Tocchet
  • Allvin asked him about 1 to 1-½ years ago if he wanted to be a head coach; Tocchet told Foote that if Foote wanted to be a head coach he’ll help him
  • Talked to Tocchet yesterday and they are so happy for each other
  • Tocchet felt comfortable with Foote’s strong personality around him; they figured out how to work together really well
This Past Season (Foote)
  • Is now just turning the page; he’s his own person
  • Has ideas and is going to apply them
  • Are going to be a team that competes every night; going to be hard to play against
Ensuring Communication with Players (Foote)
  • Has already spoke with a few players and will be reaching out to more
  • Will probably change the skate tests and make them a little bit harder
Fixing Elias Pettersson (Foote)
  • Had some pretty good discussion with him this year
  • Really thinks Pettersson wants to be the best and knows what he has to do
  • Moving forward, providing the support for Pettersson and make sure he is in a good place
Cal Foote Trial (Allvin)
  • Adam Foote is not on trial but they respect the process that is going on
Cal Foote Trial (Foote)
  • Respects the question and understands it’s the media’s job to ask
  • Can’t comment on the trial and won’t
  • Is there for his family
  • The trial had nothing to do with his decision on accepting the position to be a head coach
Play Style for Next Season (Foote)
  • Tocchet instilled a lot of great things; culture and defensive play are mentioned
  • Jokes that everyone is lucky that he was such a good offensive defenceman and he has some ideas on how to get better there
  • It’s early in the process and will have discussions with the two coaches they are looking to hire
Assistant Coaching Positions (Foote)
  • Need an offensive guy and need a defensive guy
  • Would like to run the defensive still but isn’t sure if that’s the way head coaches work in the NHL
Canucks’ Young Defencemen (Foote)
  • Really lucky to have depth there; the more you have the better
  • Loves stacking the defence up; need them to win a championship
Update on the Current Coaching Staff (Allvin)
  • Haven’t been able to sit down on this yet
  • Will potentially be adding two coaches
  • Want to keep Sergei Gonchar and Yogi Svejkovsky as well
Tom Willander (Allvin)
  • Very excited to get another young defencemen under contract
  • Player development staff have been working with him for the past two years
  • Willander’s play in training camp will dictate where he is going to play
Foote’s Coaching Strategies (Foote)
  • Loved playing box lacrosse and was an offensive player there
  • Didn’t like only being a defensive defenceman early in his career; Marc Crawford put it on him; had a conversation with Crawford a month ago and they talked about how everyone wants to play on the powerplay; his Dad explained to him how he should accept the role he was given; playing that role allowed him to play against the best players in the world
  • His role as the shutdown guy made him study the other team’s offense and understand how they were going to try and beat him; understood what worked and put them in a tough spot
  • Is going to surround himself with the right people and have discussion on how to make the offense better
Practice Habits (Allvin)
  • Becoming a championship team starts with how you prepare yourself
  • When you learn the game through practice, it comes easier
  • Are always going to push the team to get better
  • Exit meeting morale after when he was first hired, was “it’s too bad we missed it” while this past season the players were sincerely disappointed
  • Players are starting to understand that if you want to be in the upper echelon of the league, it requires daily preparation

Of course Farhan is going to ask such a Pejorative Slured question about Cal

These questions are going to come with regularity. It is a major story and Foote will be in front of the media on a consistent basis.

The Canucks would have been wise to avoid this.
