What did Gretzky get Edmonton when they traded him?

Now find something similar with players today and replace the 15 miilion with another prospect or retention and there's your answer.

In other words, nothing the Oilers fans will be happy with.

Obviously, he's not getting traded. But for this fun hypothetical, what would actually be realistic if a trade was to go through.

Like let's assume the Hurricanes were trading for McDavid. They'd probably offer Aho, Rantanen, and Nikishin.
I dont think there is anything obvious. There is a real chance he says he wont re-sign in Edm and is gonig to test FA and obviously set the new standard for highest contract. If that happens, the Oilers have this last run with him and then would be wise to move him this offseason for the largest bounty possible rather than lose him for nothing.

IMO the blueprint for a 1 year rental McDavid:

Top line player
Middle six established player
Your top prospect
1st round pick

So... Necas, Lehkonen, Ritchie, 1st from COL

If there is a guarentee he re-signs for 8 years, then that goes up more.

Love to trade my 18 year old franchise center and three more top-4 picks for a guy who is going to walk straight to free agency in a year and change.

McDavid's value is drastically lower because of his impending free agency.
to be clear, i'm not suggesting SJ would actually do this. i'm just stating what I think it would take.

And I'm saying that SJ wouldn't even consider trading Celebrini straight across for one year of McDavid. The only "realistic" reason for Edmonton to trade McDavid would be if they didn't think he would re-sign in Edmonton. In that scenario, they would take Celebrini straight up easily.
