With really short seasons like this you'll always get wonky results. With only 36 games normal variance is going to play a big part. And presumably the player ratings are based only on the season in question, so this type of sim builds variance on top of variance. (That is, if a player's normal output is between 30 and 40 goals, and he scored 40 that season, in the simulation he's now going to have a normal output of say 35 to 45 goals.) Flukes can just get flukier.

I've used this simulation. Play a full season using the historical schedule for that season and the individual player stats are usually pretty close to real life with some variation that you might expect. You'll occasionally have a real fluky result but not as often as one might think.

Hey Bauer, I have this sim but haven't played in quite a while, found another game more to my liking but I appreciate all the work you put into making these videos. It is tough to watch on Youtube though, especially since the text and other elements on the screen are too small to see.

What is the game that You like better?

Inside the Crease from Inside Sports Games. It's not a sim - it's a board game with cards but there is also a computer version that is a faithful translation of the board game. I had played the Stratomatic Hockey board game for 23 years and while it was a lot of fun, there were aspects of the game that were unsatisfying to me and I found Inside the Crease to be a better alternative on many counts.

I played Action PC hockey for awhile but became bored with the whole sim aspect of it while trying to replay a Seals season. But I do like the idea of using a sim game for the kind of project the OP is doing - matching up teams from different eras. It's a fun project to follow.

There is a lot of tweaking of the team's strategies you can do as coach. Micro-manage as much or as little as you want.

It depends on a variety of factors: What era the game is set for, kind of strategy the computer coach is set to use, the defensive ratings of the teams involved, goalie rating ect.

I've played many games from the 80s era with strategy set accordingly and I routinely get 6-5 scores. In the case of this past game the gentleman posted you have a very tough defensive team in the Flyers coupled with a goalie that has the maximum rating 10. That's tough to score on.

You have to remember that it's the playoffs. The games are defensive minded, which is exactly what happens in real life. The playoff games in the sim tend to be hard fought and defensive minded. That's one thing that I don't like about other games I've played: those games play the 7th game of the Stanley Cup finals like it's just another game in mid-November. That's not to say there will not be some playoff games that are high scoring affairs, for example, the '83 Oilers are in Group B.

I don't know if you remember Game 6 of the '74 Cup Finals. In spite of the high powered Bruins with Orr and Esposito in the game, the final score was 1-0 with the only goal by Moose Dupont in the first period.

My all-time favorite Hab (that is coming from a non-Hab fan). The Soviets called him the "Big Train", which was kinda strange since he was not at all a big man. I assume they meant the speed and power he had when rushing with the puck down the right wing. I think his North American nickname was more appropriate: the Roadrunner. Does anyone know if he had a different nickname in French? I don't think there were many more players who created more excitement and brought more people to their feet than Cournoyer.

Here are all the goals from Game 2 of the 72 Summit Series. Most of you probably have seen them all many times. For those who haven't, go to about the 1:40 for a typical Cournoyer goal. The excitement he created is one of the reasons I'm a hockey fan and will be until I die, even though the powers that be are trying their best to kill it right now. The first goal of the game is also a typical Phil Esposito goal. The Peter Mahovlich goal was not a typical goal for him, but is one of the greatest goals of all time, no exaggeration, especially given the time and circumstance.
