Gotta give to get. IMO if you make that trade you go to the playoffs with the strongest lineup this organization has fielded... maybe ever.

Very tough to swallow but Shatty is not Erat.

Shattenkirk is a rental. You do not give up your best offensive prospect and a first round pick for (hopefully) 4 months. If he had some term left and could allow us to leave Orlov unprotected or let Alzner walk... maybe.

That's an absurd price for a rental we couldn't possibly resign. You're basically advocating throwing away the Top Prospect in the organization (+). Shattenkirk isn't Erat but I'm pretty sure McLellan would know that if a trade can be mentioned in the same sentence as the Erat trade it's something to be avoided. I knew Good Ol George was gonna be GMing again, I just didn't think he'd be posting on our board on hfboards.

It's expensive but there's going to be a competitive bidding process for Shattenkirk and this is the last year for our current squad. A top-4 RHD could put us over the top.

After this year we're going to have to move guys anyway because of the cap. We can trade Johansson to free up the cap space for Oshie/Alzner/Kuzy/Bura and get young offensive prospects in return. Ditto with Orpik (if anyone will take him) and Gruby.

NOVA
Kuznetsov (currently $3,000,000)......7 years $6.5
Burakovsky (currently $894,167).......2 years $3.0 bridge like Kuznetsov
Connolly (currently $850,000)...........2 years $1.5 max
Orlov (currently $2,570,000).............5 years $4.75
Schmidt (currently $812,500)............2 years $1.5
Grubauer (currently $750,000)...........2 years $2 doubt he wants that role though

If something like this was to shake out, rough guessimate would be that's about a 10.5 million increase to the team's cap for next season. Subtract Williams (3.25) and Winnik (2.25), your down to 5. Trade MOJO and his 4.5 for picks/prospects, leaves the team with the option to either re-sign Oshie or Alzner but not both. :shakehead

Of course we don't know what the salary cap may be, Bettman in December in Palm Beach indicated it could be an added 2 mil or it could be flat and then of course who do the Caps lose to LV also factors.

I'd try to negotiate a deal with McPhee to get him to select Orpik.

Let go of / trade Johansson, Orpik, Winnik, Gruby and sign Williams to a smaller deal than $3.5 (doubt anyone will give him a raise).

We're not likely to get "young offensive prospects" in return for Mojo, Orpik, or Grubbauer. Picks possibly, but nothing even remotely capable of replacing Vrana. When was the last time someone in the NHL became the subject of a "competitive bidding process" and it worked out for the team acquiring them? There are certainly multitude examples of that strategy blowing up horribly.

If we're going to have to "move guys anyway because of the cap" the last thing we should be doing is bringing in guys who are primed to be overpaid.

Bottom line, Shattenkirk is a pipemare. Something some people daydream about but is actually very scary in the light of day.

Hossa and Dupuis for Armstrong, Christensen, Esposito and a 1st worked out pretty well for PITT.

And I think Mojo, a young versatile top-6 F with term and a reasonable cap hit, could certainly fetch offensive prospects.

The point is this year is *the* year-- last year in the current window and next year's roster will almost assuredly not be as strong. I say we go for broke this year and if we win a Cup, who ****ing cares if Vrana is gone.

Marcus Johansson is tied for 4th on the team in Even Strenth Points. Why do the Caps want to trade him for prospects?

After this year? Because I'd rather have Oshie and Alzner and Mojo makes too much money.

TJ Oshie is tied for 20th in the league in goal scored after missing 9 games. I mean...he is a UFA. I love him but unless he really wants to stay he is going to get a stupid contract somewhere else. Meanwhile do you know who Johansson is tied with at 4th on the team in ESP? Oshie

IMO Oshie is the straw the stirs the top-line and makes the top-6 go in the way Beags makes the bottom-6 go. More valuable than purely what shows up on the score sheet.

Do they even have the cap space for both?

I'd be so furious.

I'm okay with moving a first - but vrana isn't going to be a bust. He's a legit future top 6 player. ANY rental I don't think I'd move him for. Not just Shattenkirk. I wouldn't move vrana for Crosby even probably if Crosbys deal ended in 20 games.

Wouldn't touch 'Shatty' with a 10 ft pole.

So mojo is our worst top 6 forward.

And if you took away his hot start of the season he's prolly a lot worst.

4th?

Advanced Alternative Stats
He is great at 3v3 OT/during empty net situations and he is 2nd best forward defensively in top-6 (along with Oshie), but you can make an argument that he is currently Caps worst offensive top-9 forward (not even top-6).

Lets count how many top-9 wingers we have.

Ovechkin
Johansson
Oshie UFA
Williams UFA
Burakovsky RFA
Connolly RFA
Vrana
Wilson

I think they are in a much tougher situation concerning the defense. Orlov needs to be protected without contract and with good stats (I presume). Alzner needs to be signed after expansion to a pricey contract. Orpik needs to be traded. Schmidt is also without contract.

Williams for another year seems much more possible right now than Oshie to a long contract.

So I'd still think about trading Winnik and getting a middle-6 winger on a contract beyond 2017 (at deadline). Connolly will go 4LW temporarily and Oshie will be a rental.

PS: Resigned Bura will go top-6 next season, hard to argue with that, right?

PPS: Oshie and Williams know this is the last run with current team, one way or another. They will be playing at "110%". This is very good. I hope another C in Eller will help to offset potential Backs/Kuzy's fail/injury.

PPPS: GMBM did very good in the summer. Eller's 3,5M will be off the books right in time to extend that useless guy Carlson to 7M contract.
