Phil D out for tonight's rematch with Tucson. Tolopilo back in net.

Not only is Onyebuchi still in the lineup, but 6-9 240 Curtis Douglas draws in for Tucson as well. 148 PIM in 57 games last season. Say a prayer for the boys.

What a period. Down 3-0. Forwards not getting much pressure, defencemen scrambling, goalie shaky, and Onyebuchi punches out the badly overmatched Kambeitz in the "stand up for your teammate" fight.

Just looking at who's on the ice for the goals, it appears that Pettersson and Kudryavtsev are now a pair, both at even strength and on the pk (they were on the ice for both of Tucson's power play goals, and they're both +1).

2025/26
Hughes Hronek
Branstromm Willander
Kudryavtsev Pettersson

I kid, I kid.

Josh Doan steals from Wolanin, walks in down the right side and fires a perfect shot over the short-side shoulder of Patera (who replaced Tolopilo after 20 minutes) to make it 5-2 midway through the third period.

Abby's 'win one', lose one start to the season continues. I know after a loss, everyone focuses on the young guys.

But this team has a lot AHL veterans like Wolanin, PDG, Blais, Friedman, Stevens, and even guys like Smith, Twarynski and Kambeitz have been in the AHL for a long time now. Then there's Sasson, Neilsen, Woo, Karlsson and Brisebois, who you can hardly call 'rookies' entering their third AHL seasons.

Right now they're not getting much out any of their veteran players.

Agree. Very predicable since the players brought in had previously proven themselves mediocre to poor in the AHL previously. Stevens, Twarynski, Kambeitz, Smith are all bottom end vets at this level. Wolanin, PDG and maybe Blais are top tier but banged up. Team is thin.

Karlsson, too, has missed the last four games. Every team has some injuries/callups to deal with at points of the season but this squad has suffered from a spate of absences of key guys in the early going. Pure AHL filler such as Stevens, Twarynski and Kambeitz are found in the bottom six in every AHL city; they're neither the solution nor the problem.

The good news-- and really, the more important news-- is that the U22 prospects on the whole are holding up their end of the bargain.

The best thing about the Abbotsford Canucks season so far, isn't the wins and losses. It's the fact that Kudryavtsev and D-Petey are now getting top-four minutes as 20-year olds.

Given the sorry state of the blueline in Vancouver, the Canucks desperately need a few of these kids to start working out.
