Player Discussion Aatu Raty

I'd just like one of those guys to step up. Tired of seeing the tweeners like Aman and Karlsson who don't really offer anything. Zero bite. Need more Sherwoods. Raty is young enough and skilled so he seems to be coming along.

So what's the word here guys? Where are we all at on this player? 3 goals in 2 games with very limited ice time. First goal last night was a bit soft but the second I loved how he got in position lifted the Blue Jackets players stick to get the pass and put it home.

The knock on him has always and continues to be that he's too slow. Can he overcome that and find a consistent place in our lineup next year? What's his ceiling here? Would the Nucks be looking to package him for another higher ceiling center? All things I've wondered lately.
Encouraging stretch of games. Nice to see the production

has always had high skill and hockey sense with a big body. Was at 17 being considered as a 1OA type until teams started to dissect his skating.

I dont think it's ever gonna be good enough to push play and he's probably a utility btm 6 or 4th line type player because of it but i never though Henrik and Daniel could get near where they got at 22 either. Obviously with each other that was a unique situation so it will be harder for Raty just got to refuse to lose ground and improve

His edge data for top speed is better than Pius Suter (21.07) and even Mason McTavish and he's not that far off some vets who still put up decent numbers but his tendency to take short choppy strides and flatten out on his edges is what's worse because it looks so egregious when it happens and someone gets the jump on him.

Maybe he gets to be a decent 3C if he can keep improving but this team is pretty damn slow with Joshua Boeser Suter in the top3 lines currently. Could see him holding down a 4th line with a couple energy players with his size/strength as soon as next year

Has to tighten up defensively as well but that's pretty universal for young players and as far as a solution down the middle to help compliment EP40 i don't see it

He needs to hire Bo Horvat’s skating coach.

I definitely think there’s something to work with here - his work ethic and faceoff ability are both big pluses. Defense can be taught. If he can just improve his wheels, I think he’s a full time NHL player.

Unless the Canucks make a big trade; then Raty is almost guarantied a roster spot next September. With Suter likely gone; and Chytil a huge question mark going forward; there's a big hole down the middle.

Besides, didn't I read somewhere that Raty would need waivers to be sent back down to Abbotsford next season? So that's why these auditions late in this NHL season are so important.

And then it's back to the AHL and Abbotsford, where hopefully he has a monster playoff run.

Funny i was thinking to myself earlier how many times over the years we have heard that on these boards.......I don't know if it's always as easy as that ....it's been a known concern for a while now so you should assume that he's consistently working on it.

I do agree there is definitely something to work with. If he ever can get to be even a slightly above average skater from where he is now he has second line C potential........that's a big IF at this point though.

Yeah he's not waiver eligible.....I could see him being packaged in a deal with other assets (something like a Garland, him and a 2nd?) for a legit second line center though IF the Canucks aren't as confident as him improving his speed .........at this point I'd rather stay patient and keep him ......I agree barring a trade he starts next year actively playing with the big club.

He needs to skate in offseason with someone who can identify areas of improvement, and ways to achieve those goals.
Didn’t he finally figured it out this offseason and made a huge jump? He was way slower than this. Hopefully this offseason he can build on it and get faster.

Karlsson plays with a ton of bite.

Yes he did get better very noticeably in training camp.

If he can get to even Pettersson’s level of skating that would be great. His skating will determine whether he tops out as a 3C or a top 6 C. His skating prior to this season was absolutely dreadful.

I think he may need to be a bit quicker on his feet, if that's actually a thing. He clearly knows where to go, is decent to good in the dot, has some mass and seems to read the ice well. I too recall him coming back this season with more speed, so perhaps it's the first few steps that need improving? He should hang out with Hughes over the summer and try to emulate his shifty play, ha ha.

Yep.

He really should work with speed and explosiveness as his main focus next summer.

Everything else should be secondary.

Yep it’s 100% his quickness with his first couple of steps he needs to work on.

He does also make some poor reads on the defensive side every now and then.

As a guy looking to make the team in a depth role he’s going to have to fix that.

That first goal against Columbus has me intrigued. Sure it was soft, but with speed you can beat NHL goaltenders with that shot. The second one he was in the right place, just like against the Isles. Maybe there's 2nd line upside there. His numbers in the AHL were very encouraging.

I'm liking the youth movement on this team. It's a big silver lining to this season for me.

There absolutely has been potential all along.

But it all relies on him fixing his summer training to maximise developing his explosiveness.

Hi skating is *vastly* improved this year and he'll almost certainly be somewhere in the bottom-6 for the NHL team next year, unless he's included in a trade for a skill forward.
It's funny how guys here who have probably never been on a pair of skates are the ones saying he needs a skating coach. He puts in a ton of time on his skating skills.

Raty looks to be caught in the middle to me.

His instincts are of a top6 quality, but the lack of footspeed restricts his ability there. He'll flash offense when he's in the play. When not in the play, on balance, he's too late to be a consistent factor. This then gets him bumped down the line-up. Once there, production becomes harder and his lack of footspeed becomes more noticeable as a result.

I don't see this vast improvement in skating with him. His acceleration is better. Top speed looks the same.

But that may be my XBox 360 read on it. I'm posting this after my floor hockey game so grain of salt...

Tart is hard to read because typically prospects don’t suddenly improve their skating after years of it being the same. The fact that it did change suddenly makes things bit more interesting. hopefully he can build on top of whatever the f*** he did last season because if he can do that, that raises his ceiling to a 2nd line guy and f*** do we need that.
