Series Talk: [A1] Toronto Maple Leafs vs [WC1] Ottawa Senators | Part II (TOR lead 3-1)

Now we're playing the "heavy favourite" card just to make sure all bases are covered.

Leafs get upset, they choked.
Leafs win, they were supposed to.

Sens are a very good team, and they're only going to get better. They finished one point back of Florida, and five behind Tampa. I don't think a lot of intelligent hockey fans would be shocked if they knocked the Leafs off.
No offense but Leafs are the heavy favourites to win this series. If Ottawa wins it would be a big upset.
And if you don't believe that tell me which team would undertake major changes if they lose?

No one thinks this. Leafs fans have been through way too much nonsense in the playoffs to assume that this is over.

That said, there are definitely a few Sens fans in this thread acting like the Leafs losing is a foregone conclusion, so maybe check internally with your own side.

No one has to bring up how butt clenching that 4-1 score felt. And where all our minds went at 4-2

Neither would.

Yes, Leafs are the clear favorites but they have choked year after year after year with this same core and not made changes. Why would this time be any different?

Yeah I mean Toronto should win this series. This isn't like their past series vs TB or BOS where they were up against an elite team. It isn't like 2022 vs TB where they could play well and still lose because they're up against the likes of Kucherov, Vasi, Hedman etc.

If they lose this, it's because the Leafs blow it. Which is obviously possible given it's Toronto

So you are saying that if the Leafs lose this series their management brings back all the core 4 plus virtually everyone else? That means signing Marner to a $12 million plus multi year deal, resigning JT ,signing Knies to a big deal, retaining all the D and keeping the goaltending tandem?

How can they be favourites when they can never win a series?

They are favourites for sure. -165 to -170 before the series started is not a heavy favourite.

I see what you're saying, and I guess it's just semantics. Personally, and maybe it's just me, but I think this Sens team is very capable of pulling off an upset. Favourites? 100%. "Heavy"? No way.

My opinion anyway.

We won because your players played like morons. That is it. Own it and move on.

Although, most of the penalties were legitimate ...

I will say, that Matthews call was a complete dive, after watching the replay, you could see he barely touched 34 and he went diving into boards as if he was going swimming.

He can't be doing stuff like that, early in the playoffs, if we go for a deep run, refs will be aware of stuff like that.

It's interesting how some goalies manage to drop completely like this when the playoffs starts. Thinking of Hellebuyck as well.

Does the system in from of them, on both sides, change so completely or is it all nerves?

It's all mental, can't handle the spotlight. Ullmark did the same thing playing behind literally the best regular season of all time, Bruins lost that series because Montgomery refused to stop starting Ullmark.

Because Ottawa is a really flawed team right now, especially in net and on special teams.

And yet you look at the season record and we went 3-0-0 against the Leafs.

There’s a hundred ways to look at this result / series.

Refs are well aware that Leaf players embarrassed them last night. Won’t be getting easy calls going forward

It is possible after all these years, the Leafs core is finally figuring out the reffing from the Bruins, Panthers and Lightning. Knowing what they can get away with and what they can control.

We'll see in future games if it looks that way, but phantom high sticks being called to put the Leafs down 5-3 against the Lightning, the only "pick" I've ever seen called against the Lightning, Bruins milking high sticking penalties, the Panthers being able to rough behind the play etc.

It'll be interesting to see, if the Leafs continue to get the kind of reffing those teams get, if they can actually go far at all.
