Huh? Im not talking about free agency.

Marner can sign an 8 year deal regardless of what team he is on as long as he's traded before the deadline. There is zero benefit for Buffalo to pay premium to have him pre-signed when they can negotiate the contract post trade.

It's moot though because of that NTC, he's not waiving to Buffalo
Exactly. The only way you trade a guy like Dahlin is for someone who is signed or at least you know will sign. You arent trading for a UFA, which is what the OP is referencing or at least did not infer that a signed Marner was the deal. They said Marner as of right now and as of right now, he will be a UFA in a few months so in what universe does he make sense in a Sabres deal?

In what world do you trade a #1 dman for a winger who is a constant no show in the playoffs ( not that it matters for us anyway), whose own fans want to run him out off town every season? Jesus f***ing christ

Marner would never waive for Buffalo. I’d be interested in something around Cousins/Power. Not sure what plus Buffalo would add but it’s something to work with. But there’s no incentive for Marner to waive. An extension in place is not a big sell for him as he will get significant offers from Toronto and other teams. Also he’d be going to a much worser team. Zero chance he’d waive.
Why we need Senators here?

People acting like Marner isn't a 100+ point player who is elite defensively. He's certainly more valuable than Dahlin, and he has had a much better career as well.

If Marner was on any other team, people wouldn't be acting like its a joke to say he's way more valuable than Dahlin, because fans have no critical thinking and just hate the leafs.

I haven't seen much anyone criticize Marner aside from one or two comments about his playoff production.

Yes, Marner is an elite winger. Dahlin is an elite defenseman. I'd take the elite defenseman over the elite winger any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

I don't think hating the Leafs has anything to do with it. Sure you get the "playoff choker" comments which are a little exaggerated and a bit unfair, but I think most people realize Marner is an awesome player. I think the elite defensively part is a bit overstated, but he's pretty good defensively as well. If he hits free agency I'd be happy if my team took a run at him even if there are much bigger holes to address.
That said you're way off on Dahlin. He may never win a Norris trophy playing on a terrible Buffalo team but he has that potential. Worst case he's one of the best defenseman in the league, a true #1D that plays all situations for Buffalo. He's just entering his prime and he's locked up long-term, he's their franchise player. The only way you entertain moving a guy like that is for a similarly elite player at one of the more important positions (#1D or #1C) not a winger even one as talented as Marner.

No, you aren't getting what I am saying. Toronto cannot extort extra value onto Marner by offering a sign and trade. Dahlin not being a free agent this summer has quite a lot more trade value than Marner who is currently lined up to be that

Maybe because people like you (Finns and Heiskanen fans) are utterly incapable of looking at Dahlin in anything remotely resembling an objective manner, and your posts in this thread prove it It's laughable really.

And I'll leave it at that.
Yeah, it's always nice to get grouped up with a random moron. This is a stupid comment like his are. Finns on this board are not a big portion that requires some broad sweep. Talk about the person you reply to, not their countrymen. I'd say HF has around 100 Finnish posters at best.

I disagree. Marner signed to 8x$x and his value skyrockets. Obviously im guessing TOR keeps him then, but hypothetically.

Or if they pull a Huberdeau/Tkachuk trade where both signed/knew they would sign 8 year deals.

In no universe does a signed Dahlin get traded for a UFA Marner.

If you’re personally offended, you have my apologies. I did stereotype, which I should not have done.

Saying that, comments like that about Dahlin are as predictable as a clock whenever his name is mentioned on these boards, and it gets tiring.

lock this thread. it's never happening,

in the alternate reality where this occurs, the city of buffalo burns down

Marner is too emotionally attached to Toronto. If I’m any other GM I probably would not want to risk spending the assets needed to acquire him because there’s a strong chance he falls apart mentally when it happens.

Hilarious that you specifically bring up replacement level then four posts later someone shows the chart that Dahlin is 99% WAR.

Just say you don't like Dahlin, you don't have to make up bullcrap to justify it.
Dahlin's defensive pairing with Byram is having 52% expected goals this season. Marner's line is playing +60% hockey. That's quite a big difference being 52-48 player and 61-39 player. Yes it is a line work but Dahlin's line as a whole isn't any worse than Marner's although he has Matthews, because the rest 3 players on the ice are so much worse than those who Buffalo put on the ice with Dahlin. No excuses Dahlin seems not to be ever able to lead Buffalo on the playoffs and he is not better than 110 points elite 2-way forward. I don't care to argue about this more if you can't see that. Marner gets hate because Leafs have failed in playoffs but Dahlin's Buffalo can't even get there.

As a Leaf fan I’d do backflips if we could land Dahlin for Marner. I’m not a Marner hater but I recognize the need to change the roster/cap structure is dire.
