Proposal: A top 6 center and/OR top 4 RHD to the League's worst team

The Predators are obviously the biggest bust of the season so far after going all in this offseason. While they continue to struggle, I think they can still make some quality moves, without completely mortgaging the future, before the season slips away for good to be competitive for a cup (aside from probably finding a new coach, but that's a totally different story at the moment). At least Stamoks, Marchy and Skjei only cost us (precious) cap space.

There's no shortage of teams in the NHL that would love to add a top 6 center and a top 4 RHD (not named Fabbro) to their roster. I think a big addition or two and adding another rookie from the minors is what the team needs at this point, short of just completely dismantling the roster and trying to get a ransom for Josi and Forsberg (again, a different story and not the point of this conversation).

All of that to say, here's where we're at-

Players I would add for the right price:

Nelson
Backlund
Malkin
Grioux (available? does he play center?)
Dobson
Rasmus Andersson
David Jiricek (we're so short on RHD that I'd take a gamble here)
Sidney Crosby

Assets I would consider moving:

Novak
Tomasino
Lauzon
Schenn
Nyquist
Matthew Wood
One of: Edstrom or Svechkov
One of: TBL or VGK 2025 1st round pick

Pull up Kemell, Shaefer, or both

you are not getting guys like Malkin Crosby Nelson or Dobson for that.

Sharks will send you Granlund for a 2nd and a good prospect or one of those firsts (fine putting a condition on getting the latest)

Do not want to give up our 1sts and our good prospects for 35+ year olds. I'd rather trade our 2 1sts and 2 seconds to see how far we can move up at the draft. I still say we have until thanksgiving to pull it together, if we can't we should not be buyers at all.

I don't think they should be adding to the team, they will not finish last as they have a good core but they added way to much new players the last 2 years, once they learn how to play together they will be dangerous but I think they will miss the PO this year but still be in the famous "mix" we love to say here in MTL

So you are looking at pieces like Crosby, Malkin, Giroux as a veteran F's, and Jiricek, Andersson and D, and you would consider moving Schenn, Tomasino, Novak etc.

Maybe you just worded it badly, but if you want good pieces, you need to pay up. You listed some good pieces, but some of those are just additional pieces to make the cap work.

And I'm not even going to the part of trading for Crosby or Malkin, not matter what Dubas has said.

I get it man. The way it's looking, our pick will be a top 5 anyway. I think, if I'm Barry Trotz, I can't afford to not try to go for it next season. Maybe Malkin or Giroux doesn't tip the needle in 25/26, but a mid-career guy certainly helps that. I think he can play retool and try again next year with the amount of assets we have, while still drafting more young players than most teams. If they turn it around by the end of the month with a little heater, you have to add IMO

Yeah, I think you're just hinging on one single word there for no reason, but I understand what you're saying. It was more geared towards saying I would consider moving a top pick or prospect in the right deal

Coming into the season I thought them getting Andersson made a lot of sense but not sure I'd be buying right now, they were kind of a surprise last year to me and are possibly regressing

Asking for Dobson and offering those as options just isn’t going to work. Barry knows how Lou operates and none of that will get it done for Noah Dobson. I doubt that even gets it done for Brock Nelson either.

I'd rather go the internal route, at least when it comes to top 6 forwards. Maybe next year bring Molendyk.

The Penguins aren't going to trade Crosby or Malkin but I think fans are probably overestimating what they'd bring back if they would actually be traded. Both have full NMCs and the Penguins would be working with them to trade them to whichever team they wanted to go to. The Penguins don't have any leverage in those negotiations.

They wouldn't get nothing obviously, but it's the same way that Kane and Giroux had pretty underwhelming returns when they were traded. In a hypothetical scenario where Malkin wants to be moved to Nashville, I think something like Edstrom and Vegas' 1st almost definitely gets it done. I'm honestly not even 100% sure that he'd bring back that much.

I think it would genuinely be funny if the "Edstrom+VGK 2025 1st" package moved again. First for Hertl, then for Askarov, then for Malkin.

In theory I think a deal forRasmus Andersson with Molendyk or Wood coming back as the main piece makes sense.

In reality our ownership mandates that we need to continue being the most mediocre franchise in the league, and would never allow it

I'm of the opinion that the Flyers intend to trade Morgan Frost this year, and that he'll settle in comfortably as a 2C when he's finally on a team that won't jerk him around like it's their job. Given that the names OP listed feel better suited for acquiring a developmental guy than a sure-fire top 6 C, Frost might suit your needs.

You should not be targeting a center on the wrong side of 30. Go make a good offer for Zegras or something

I highly doubt Dobson would be available but Andersson probably would be for the right price. Flames would probably want one of Edstrom, Svechkov, or Molendyk alone with a 1st as the base

Imo it's just a chemistry issue with the Preds right now. Wait a couple more months to see if they can reroute it a bit then call back
