Not in Philly
It seemed incongruent for sure.
That being said...Ekholm is a very smart player and Im sure that whatever he said was worthwhile but I would sure like to know specifically what he did say and why he picked that time to say it.

Guess it was yapping something along "We dont sauce through the zone to blue line in the Oil"

If Cagguila continues to play that gritty pest role he’s been playing then they need to keep him here.
Agree. Cagguila isn't exactly my favorite player (he's largely a 'nothing-burger', to be honest), but the degree of spirited physical play from him compared to most of these warmed-up stiffs this season is highly noticeable.

I do not get the Derek Ryan love this season from Knoblach. Love Derek Ryan -- great guy, great player in a leadership / defensive role for three strong seasons, great bang-for-buck -- but it's time to face the reality that he is cooked. I think this was largely evident through much of last season, but the Oilers org are in love with old guys right now.

Anyway, fun game to watch. But man, the Rangers were ass. Just a horrible effort from them. Zibanejad may be the worst defensive forwards in the NHL (minus 4 in this one).

With about 3.5 minutes left, I was thinking to myself, "Damn! What a great game by Nurse. He's just done it all and been reall impressive in all areas, and-- . . . Ah, sh**!" He had to do a brutal giveaway at the end, just to inflate Stu's GAA a little more.

Oilers now have 1 win this season over good teams. (Unless you count Vancouver, in which case they have 2.)

Emberson had an interesting game. He is a little better defensively than I gave him credit for but he is not fantastic at passing the puck up out of the zone and you can see in the ozone he lacks confidence. Overall he got the job done though and could be a third pair guy long term or a good quality number 7.
As you can see from the above post what we need now is a strong defensive defenseman first to cover off at least some of Nurse's two brain dead giveaways per game and second to help out with teams like Minny. While I would love to have a prime Provorov its not very realistic given long term cap implications. But defensive guys with a good first pass up are out there especially closer to the deadline as there are about 10 difference makers at the top of the coming draft. These guys are paid 3.5 ish long term and we could get some retention short term.

Its become quite obvious that Stuart is a 2 and 1 goalie. Not extremely consistent. He needs a backup that can play every 2nd or 3rd game. His lack of great movement also makes him susceptible from hash mark to hash mark from the mid to high slot.
Its also very obvious the coaching staff have little confidence in Pickard in games they must win and when they do play him its for 1 game even if he plays quite well.

This can't continue. Either substantively better the D (expensive) or get a backup that becomes a 1B
and just get a D that can cover off Nurse.

Of course a third option might be to replace both goalies to a more steady base ...guys without really high upsides but just steady around .910 with a good defense in front of them.

Janmark had a strong game.
Hope this helps Podko's confidence. Like the game he brings. Wears his heart on his sleeve. Willing to dig in the ditches. Believe he can be taught to go to the net consistently.

We need a bit of luck in Savoie's development but i would like to see a line of ...

Podko -- Drais -- Savoie

get a shot late in the season.

Most teams in the league don't get .910 goaltending anymore. Wouldn't be easy to find 2 guys who can do that these days.

Supposing we improved our D...(and realistically Derek Ryan sat half the time at least)

Say

Eks----Bouch
Nurse --- (Provorov - unlikely, Carrier - cap?, Walman - have to overpay)
Kulak -- kovacevic (have my reasons for this)
Emberson

Both Alex Lyon and Dan Vladar (neither of which could handle huge workloads) would have a shot at .910
Both are likely to be available for different reasons Lyon maybe sooner. Neither have high end potential -- your not buying a star in either. But both can be quite steady.

This is the strong D (with a defensive leaning) and a stable Tender option.

There are other ways to achieve defensive stability. This is not Jackson/Bowman's concept at this time. They want to lean more to a two way mobile defense. This will lead to more high event hockey with bigger ups and downs. Certainly more entertaining as well.

All aboard the Oilers rollercoaster!
Fun game, good to see them playing a fast game again, that's how they'll have success.
McDavid outwaiting the whole rangers squad on his 2nd goal was the chefs kiss at the end!

Keep that urgency up and good things will happen.

Goaltending is pretty much crap shoot across the league. Quick had a .970 save% 0.91 GAA 4-0-0 record before facing the Oilers. And they lit him up for 6 goals..

This Oilers team could give up 6 with any goalie in net.. depending on who they play and how they choose to defend.

Looking at one game with a tired NYR squad doesn't define a goaltender.

Winnipeg St. Louis Dallas would very much disagree that goaltending is a 'crap shoot'. That most teams are trying to improve at that position I believe but there are numerous strategies.

I would happily trade Stuart for Shesty or Sorokin ....wouldn't you?

But yes the type of D we decide to field, the system played in front of them and how they are coached can have a dramatic effect on the style of goaltending you need.

I don’t see anything special with St. Louis, Bennington and Hofer are both sub 900 save %. They haven’t won in regulation in like 9 games.

Dallas and Winnipeg have good defensive structure in their line up to support their respective goalies. Hellebuyck is usually consistent in the regular season but craps the bed come playoffs. Same with Oettinger. He’s very much beatable, last playoff proved it.

The bolded is unrealistic. Do I want an upgrade on Skinner? Of course, but we’re not getting Shesterkin or Sorokin.. those trades just ain’t happening. Both NY teams have no reason to make the trade and it wouldn’t make sense cap wise.

Any meaningful change regarding goaltending starts with firing Dustin Schwartz.

Agreed on Schwartz however he is teflon coated.
The point is it's not a crap shoot...what you have for tenders matters. Nobody is saying were getting Shesty level tending for Stuart, quit being foolish.

I still think the coaching staff needs to approach the J Skinner situation as trying to make their system work around a player like him rather than the other way around.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying fully cater to everything but he is who is he at this point and the team signed him for a reason. Put him in a position to provide offense and insulate him defensively.

It’s such a no brainer move to put him on PP1 over Nuge for a start and then find a fit for him at evens. At the end of the day if he gets the looks he will produce but for the most part he’s had to generate his own looks which isn’t his game.

I have been disappointed with JSkinner as well but I also don’t really think hes been put in a position to succeed. I really don’t understand Jacksons vision when he signed this player. Feels so obvious to at least give him a shot on the PP to wake up RNH if anything.

Fact that Cagguila and Kapanen are coming in and pushing for spots makes me feel like this team needs 13/14 forwards on the roster. Guys need to be pushed because they are too comfortable with their place on the roster. Jackson/Bowman should of made some more cap space than running a thin roster to accrue cap space. Should be running 13F and 7D at a minimum.

The position is so volatile..

The handful of elite starters don’t even guarantee a cup win.. and the ones that win played on massive heaters.

Bobrovsky had a few crap seasons before winning it all, Panther fans were ready to waive him at one point.

Adin Hill was the third string goalie behind Thompson and Brossoit. He’s sub 900 save % this season.

Vasilevskiy was godlike in his runs but look how much he costs and not to mention he played with a stacked team including LTIR shenanigans to boot.

Kuemper was carried by a juggernaut Avs team and he was just mediocre.

Getting burnt on the Campbell contract may have caused this org to be reluctant on getting another starter. Campbell failed spectacularly.

Sloppy game.
Too bad they couldnt play the Rangers 10 times this season.
Connor and Leon had all kinds of room in this game and they just ate it up.

Really nice to see Podkolzin get his first goal. Hell of a shot too.
Caggiula channeling his inner Corey Perry in this game.
Its refreshing to see an Oiler player pissing off a goalie...especially Quick. :D
Bouchard played much better in this game. Nice shot on the goal.

Right now the Oilers have 2 players named Mattias in the top 6 in scoring.
Ekholm is 4th in team scoring and Janmark is 6th,
Janmark has 10 points in 22 games this season. He had 12 points all of last season.
He is ahead of RNH and Hyman in team scoring.
He had 2 points in tonights game and generated offence on the PK...he is having a hell of a season so far.

Credit where credit is due...Stu Skinner played a solid game. Made a great save on Kreider.
I would really like to know what Ekholm said to Kapanen after getting the secondary assist on McDavids 1st goal, Ekholm didnt seem too happy.

Hopefully the team can get completely healthy over this 5 day break.
Cagg and Podz have made a difference, not because they are offensively gifted but they just add a physical presence and an irritant that rattles the opposition. This is something the Oilers need. How many Oilers bring that element to their game?
