Movies: A Minecraft Movie

The fact that this is considered acceptable is the problem

Acceptable to whom? The purpose of Minecraft is to make money. The purpose of movies is to make money. Put those two things together, and the purpose of the Minecraft movie was to make money.

As it turns out, the movie will make ass-loads of money. Because small children like to watch non-cinematic movies made for small children.

I just don’t get the hangup here. We are talking about a children’s product like it was supposed to be made to serious adult cinematic standards?

Parents with children who are not yet conditioned to tiktok seem to be one of the few demographics who actually go to movie theaters nowadays. So it's not surprising that a movie like this does well.

It's disheartening that garbage like this makes more money than actual movies, but that's just the world we live in today.

I already said why this movie is not solely a children's product but even if we go with that, I can't take seriously the argument that just because it is means they don't have to try.

and even then, I don't fault the people who take their kids to see this movie but for the adults that endorse absolute slop like this, you are doing everyone a great disservice

I mean, it kind of is though. If you watch the trailer and still choose to attend this as a childless adult, that is 100% on you. This movie couldn’t be more obviously intended for an elementary/middle school audience.

I mean, people are allowed to like what they like. They’re allowed to buy a ticket to things they want to see.

I have zero intentions of seeing this movie because it’s obviously a bad movie which is obviously made for children. It would be like going to see Superbabies in the theater, I’m not sure why any adult would. But if they do, that’s on them. Getting upset with them about it is just… I don’t know, you’re welcome to your feelings but it’s kind of pointless.

Yes I agree that this particular movie that they chose to put out is, that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t possible to make a Minecraft movie that wasn’t mindnumbingly stupid to where you can only expect a child to enjoy it. If they didn't want to try hard enough to make something beyond that, fine, that's their prerogative. I just hate seeing that laziness be rewarded with adults flocking to the box office and then making the argument that it actually doesn't matter that the movie was crap because kids enjoyed it.

Plenty of good, original movies are being made. You’re only missing out if you choose to miss out. I saw Mickey 17 a couple of weeks ago. The script isn’t great, but it’s a good concept and Robert Pattinson is incredible.
There are some movies like that, but there are hardly "plenty." Studios no longer take risks on expensive original movies unless some really big name (like Bong Joon Ho or Nolan) is attached, so we get a few each year and that's it. Go back to the 90s, though, and you'll see a whole lot more of those kinds of films. The majority of the top-grossing movies were either aimed at adults or just as enjoyable for adults. Jump back to the current decade and the vast majority are aimed at younger audiences. Even ones that look like they're for all ages, like this movie, are increasingly appealing more to the kids than the adults. This sentiment that "my kids liked it and that's all that matters to me" sounds nice, but it would be even better if we adults enjoyed these movies just as much as our kids, so that we could share that with them instead of just being happy for them.

Again this sounds just like a classic rock fan comparing music in 1972 to whatever’s on the radio right now.

That stuff still exists. If you’re expecting to hear it on the radio, you’re in for disappointment because it’s no longer the predominant genre for mass sales. Great musical creatives are operating on other platforms.

Same thing applies to movies. We are on the verge of seeing movie theaters go largely extinct and you’re expecting great art to be found there? If you want to find great content in 2025, go to where great 2025 artists are putting out their product. Hint: it’s not at a 20-screen AMC.

What great movies that didn't have theatrical releases are you referring to? A movie that's great in any way will be given a theatrical release to capitalize on its earning potential and/or make it eligible for the Oscars. Even streamers like Netflix put their best films in theaters to make them eligible. They may not be there long or widely available until they come to streaming, but I assure you that people like me aren't missing them in that case.
