News Article: A message from Glen Sather and Jeff Gorton

Gorton's answer said everything. He can't come right out and say "yeah, were gonna can Al at the end of the season".

I got the opposite impression. No GM is going to answer the question as asked but his comments about having a lot of faith in AV and how everyone is to blame leads me to think AV isn't in as much trouble as we thought and the front office places a lot of blame on the players and their own roster decisions. I think they retool/rebuild and see what AV can do with the some fresh faces next year.

Let's face it - AV is a good coach in NY from a business sense. He doesn't win cups but throughout his NY and Vancouver tenures he has coached high-quality competitive teams. Even without a Cup, that's a good story for an owner.

We're selling everyone. They admit this team sucks. Gorton doesn't blame anyone. Doesn't blame AV. Doesn't blame himself. Doesn't blame injuries. We suck because "the team didn't gel" and "doesn't have an identity".

He actually said that EVERYONE is to blame, and that it's not all on one thing. That includes himself, the coach, the players, etc. Thought it was a good answer, because it's true.

A rebuild to make us competitive again shouldn't take very long, and it looks like AV got a vote of confidence from Gorton.

Not sure that's the case. They're not starting from zero the way they were in 2004. There wasn't a Chytil or Andersson in 04. Hell, there wasn't a Skjei or Zibanejad in 04 either.

They should also have some capspace to play with.

Yeah we have some pieces already. People forget how bad we were back then and how little we had as far as quality prospects.

I'm guessing Sather didn't like the reaction when he traded Leetch. Doesn't want trading McDonagh to take us by surprise.

This is a good manager being a good manager. Gorton is right. Everyone is to blame and he even included himself in that. He isn't just going to throw it all on AV, nor should he. He may have a lot of faith in AV but doesn't think AV is the right man for the job any more.

But its no fun if you can't automatically assume the worst.
100% right.

Not to be an ass but some people just love to complain for the sake of complaining. No reasonable person could watch that press conference and come away with a concrete conclusion that AV will be here next year.

Just because Jeff Gorton is a professional and didn't completely throw AV under the bus, that doesn't mean AV is safe. It means Gorton recognizes that problems start at the top. He said AV is partially to blame, as is the GM, the players, etc.
