A cool Little Sean Avery, Brett Hull and Joe Sakic story

I've heard this story a few times from different teammates. I seem to remember it as hull telling avery that he can't speak to Mr. Sakic that way.

The words might differ depending who you hear it from but that was the jist of it.
I heard this story about a decade ago though I remember it as being that Brett was demanding Avery call him "Big Daddy Sakic" while holding a 9mm between his teeth. It was a different game back then.

In what world is pulling someone down by the collar and telling them to shut up not considered bullying? The entire team staring him down after the incident just completes it. Would you accept that kind of behaviour at your job?

I'm curious what opinions lost out to this one.

I heard that there was an unwritten rule in the Avs/Wings rivalry that Sakic and Yzerman were off limits in terms of all the roughing up they did to each other.

Always loved this story. Hull and Sakic had been playing against each other for over a decade by then, including 2 close 7 game WCF between the Stars and Avs. Hull knew as well as anyone not to rile up Sakic, and that he'd simply kill you on the scoreboard without saying a word.

"Bully Sakic"? Really?

You're going to try to equate on-ice chatter with 'behind the scenes' physical contact? Wasn't there a coach who was recently fired and effectively banned from the league for kicking a player in the back? Guarantee you he 'said' many unsavory things to players but it was the 'physical' contact that crossed the line.

Can't believe people are still defending this kind of behaviour in this day and age.
Gtfo....behind the scenes? They were on the bench. 'Grabbed him by the jersey and pulled him down.' So violent. So mean. Worse happens in basketball when a teammate makes a nice dunk and the bench players jump on each others backs.

Also, Shanahan specifically says, 'we all kinda nodded.' He didn't say, 'we glared at him.' They 'sorta nodded' like, yeah, uh, I guess that's right...kind of a thing.

Save the self righteousness for the threads that deserve it. This ain't it

And then there's Sean Avery, a highly unrespectable person.
Sean was on a podcast recently and said hes friends with Shanahan still and they talk hockey. Or something to that effect. I was a bit surprised that Shanahan is friends with him. Considering overall how disliked Avery was in hockey.

I mean, personally I'm not shocked someone as tyrannical as Shanahan is friends with him.

i posted this story not because I thought it was new, but I haven’t heard of it before and I’m in my 40’s. And if I haven’t heard about it, I’m sure others havnt as well. Just thought it was a cool hockey tidbit that came across my way and thought people would appreciate it.

Wow. Just wow...

The one thing I took from this is Sean Avery loves to piss off hall of farmers. First you just had Brett hull who at this time was a sure fire hall of Famer, grab you and sit you down and what Does Sean Avery do, look at the rest of the team to see what Brett hull was saying was being supported. If Brett freaking hull tells you to zip it, you zip it. Why the ef are you needing more reassurances from the team. Just a total disregard. Sean Avery really gave 2 efs no matter who it was. He had zero respect for no one. Which is why no one had zero respect for him.

Avery was a POS but maybe take the time to look at at the environment he was working in. Hyper masculinity and toxic behaviour abound. Absolutely disgusting what passed as 'normal' in those days

Lol what a troll post. I'm pretty sure Hull and Avery were friends and likely still are. I've heard Avery speak very highly of Hull in interviews and admitted he was in the wrong for shouting at Sakic. Pretty sure Hull actually wanted to bring Avery to the Stars when he was assistant GM.

This is an amusing story but I'm sure all parties involved got over it real fast. Then we have people like you.

If you are trying to pull folks offside, well done.

But soon little Sean would not have the guidance of Mr. Hull and the rest of the veterans to rely on. Things would very quickly go downhill.
