Look, not gonna lie - even though I think the modern NHL is a better showcase of skill and I fully am on board with the reduction of fighting and concussion-inducing Neanderthalic plays. And even though I think Avery is pretty much a garbage human now....

...I did grow up on 90's and early 00's hockey and I was an Avs fan and nothing...nothing got my heartbeat racing and pulse surging faster as a sports fan than playoff series and game of import against the DRW. It was absolute fire and a war every time...I remember the broadcast introducing one of the playoff series with a cut of Metallica's Fuel along with clips of the rather bloody history between the clubs and I just went nuts. Pure adrenaline as a fan, right into my veins.

And through all of that somehow you had guys like Sakic and Yzerman who were just respected by all sides.

Never got the love for Avery. He was an adequate third liner when he was interested in playing hockey, which by the end of his career self-admittingly wasn't much.

If he could score one more goal for every 7 times he went offsides every game, he'd have been a consistent 20 goal scorer.

He did a lot for his personal brand when he played in New York though so good for him. Putting him in the same sentence ss Esa Tikannen or Brad Marchand is heresy.

The Patrick Bateman of the NHL.

Yea. This is a Brett Hull and Some Random Twerp story as far as I'm concerned.

Have a friend who is a former NHLer of 14 years.

For a year, he was Joe Sakic's roommate.

He says Sakic was by far the most professional player he ever played with.

Said he was humble and always worked to be his best. Never had an ego and did all the little things when no one was looking. He was a genuinely good human being when the camera's weren't rolling.

How exactly is this a 'cool' story? Looks like another case of bullying/hazing that was so prevalent in the game not so long ago. Physical abuse is never 'ok'. Brett Hull being the culprit speaks for itself, really.
that's a twisted take. Not bullying by Hull at all - demonstrating to show respect to someone who has earned respect. Avrey's schtick was all based in bullying. He name called, slut shamed, body shamed and bullied people all the time. Hull's lesson didn't resonate with Sean which just means you can lead a horse to water

I didnt realize there was any love for Avery. Even as a rangers fan, he was more of an annoyance you occasionally laughed at.

In what world is pulling someone down by the collar and telling them to shut up not considered bullying? The entire team staring him down after the incident just completes it. Would you accept that kind of behaviour at your job?

Avery was a POS but maybe take the time to look at at the environment he was working in. Hyper masculinity and toxic behaviour abound. Absolutely disgusting what passed as 'normal' in those days

This seems kind of silly to me. I get wanting to control a young guy being disrespectful somewhat but saying “you’re not allowed to speak to Mr. Sakic” seems a bit fake. I don’t believe this at all.

odd - Avery's attempt to bully Sakic was stopped by someone - that's not bullying. But you're right Avery was a POS - pretty disgusting his comments about Elisha Cuthbert and others. I hope he's doing better these days

Who knows what kinda player Avery could've been if Brett Hull didn't completely destroy his neck on that night.

a damn shame.

I've heard this story a few times from different teammates. I seem to remember it as hull telling avery that he can't speak to Mr. Sakic that way.

The words might differ depending who you hear it from but that was the jist of it.

"Bully Sakic"? Really?

You're going to try to equate on-ice chatter with 'behind the scenes' physical contact? Wasn't there a coach who was recently fired and effectively banned from the league for kicking a player in the back? Guarantee you he 'said' many unsavory things to players but it was the 'physical' contact that crossed the line.

Can't believe people are still defending this kind of behaviour in this day and age.
