Speculation: A 3rd line center to NJ

The best UFA centers are too expensive and others too mediocre, so a trade might be the best way to get a 3rd line center to NJ. But who are available?

The Devils could offer a combination of these assets:
- a 1st (2026)
- 2 x 2nds
- prospects (Casey, Hämeenaho, etc.)
- Mercer
I mean, you lot have Cody Glass.

Otherwise, for the low low price of literally any pick Fitzy wants to part with - you can have Acciari or Hayes or both!

Just make it a future considerations and don’t even worry about getting back to us for what those considerations are, we’ll just be happy you thought of us anyway.

Haula has regressed and he can't play center anymore. Mercer is a winger who has played as a center because there haven't been any other options. To put it mildly, Glass wasn't good in the playoffs.
Haula had a nasty ankle injury that he was playing with and Glass was also injured just before the playoffs so I'm not sure we know for sure what they are capable of at this point. Haula was fine as a depth center the prior year and Glass looked very good when he arrived until he was injured. I'm not suggesting either is the answer at 3C but without knowing what was hampering them who knows what they might be able to offer.

Also maybe Haula is a better winger now. His 22-23 season did primarily come on the wing.

I think having backup plans at C is good.

If NJ had done a better job drafting they would Auberts a couple of prospects to bring along in bottom six roles. Having to constantly shuffle the bottom six is frustrating to watch. Of course we both know who should be filling that role if he wasn’t an idiot .

Problem is Glass will always be injured so if you are going to use him you better have a backup plan.

Devils should sign Pius Suter as a UFA July 1. He’s an excellent 3C (20+ goals this year) who can play 2C when injuries happen. And with Jack Hughes it’s smart to have a p on Ayer who can take his minutes when the inevitable injuries occur.

Any chance Nashville goes for a big rebuild/re-tool this summer?

NJ could offer a massive package for a Forsberg/O'Reilly combo to address their top 6 FWD and 3rd line C positions.

To NJ:
Filip Forsberg
Ryan O'Reilly

To NSH:
Simon Nemec
Ondrej Palat
Dawson Mercer
2026 1st round pick
2025 2nd round pick
Lenni Hameenaho

I would be shocked if the Devils don’t got hard at him this offseason.

Yeah, I highly doubt that.

Yeah, I highly doubt that.

Curious what direction Nashville is going.

It doesn't look like there is any path to being a contender any time soon. There are rumors about a mutual contract termination with Steven Stamkos. Forsberg is going to be 31 this summer, with 5 years remaining on his contract. Josi is going to be 35 this summer, with 3 years remaining on his.

If I'm them, I move Stamkos, Marchessault, O'Reilly, Forsberg, Josi, Saros and bring in some insane youth to jumpstart a rebuild

I wouldn't but really depends on what other moves they make. Until they are able to actually clear cap it's going to be a tight squeeze.

I feel like it's more likely that they are going to get a player back in a trade for Palat or Dougie that evens out the move financially and that's where they'll get their 3c from.

Source?

We're rebuilding. We already have 3 1sts and 2 2nds this year and we're going for McKenna next year. Forsberg is young enough and good enough to stick around, Josi's injury history is a concern.

Marchessault could move after his post season comments, but I doubt we move Forsberg, Stamkos Josi or Saros anytime soon.
