Speculation: A 3rd line center to NJ

Just spitballing, I’m not a Devils fan, but on the outside looking in NJ seems to have some pretty attractive assets (Nemec, Casey, Silayev, Mercer, 1st + 2nds).

Why not pay the price and go after a long term, age appropriate fix?

Someone like Shane Wright, Ryan McLeod, Shane Pinto, etc?

I have absolutely no interest in moving any of those D for a 3C.

The Devils already have Hughes and Hischier, so they don't need a good 2C. As someone said, they need a 3C who is defensively responsible and can get 35+ points.

The Devils already have Haula who was a good 3C but has regressed because of his age and injuries. They also have few bad contracts such as Palat, Haula, Dillon and Hamilton, so I don't want another bad UFA contract to the team. That's a reason why I don't want them to sign Gourde.

Suter is probably the best option for the Devils if they target a UFA center. He is a good player, but he is also one of the slowest skaters in the league. I'm not sure if I want more slow skaters to the team. Two years ago the biggest strength of the team was their speed, but they have lost it with Noesen, Dillon and other slow skaters.

Ryan Strome might be a good option if the Ducks were ready to trade him. Compher is another one and Pageau third one. On the other hand, those guys are already over 30, so I wouldn't trade Mercer for either of them. I don't want another Zacha for Haula trade where we get only couple good seasons from that player before he regresses.

It's not easy problem to fix, but I'm sure there are still some options available.

I said some of those contracts given would be bad because they would be 30+ and hit the slide before the end of the contract.

Buffalo acquired McLeod and he’s done well. On a healthy team he was a 3C , when injuries occured he moved up.

They gave up Savoie because of their prospect depth. You might have to give up a prospect/ young player to get one.

One of the reasons he was available was due to Edmonton cap crunch . A higher cap coming you might not have this pressure.

Go sign Sam Bennett if he decides not stay with panthers and makes it to free agency . Would be a really nice fit. Could definitely use his style of play . What do you think a contract would look like ?

If the Ducks can get a top 6 wing, Ryan Strome should be moved. He's no more than a 3rd liner, but he should be solid in that 3C spot. Just not great if he needs to play higher than that for an extended amount of time, but if you're losing a Hughes/Hischier level player, you're probably not replacing them with a 3C anyways. It also shouldn't cost you much, you're not going to lose a premium asset (like a 1st or good prospect) so you can patch other holes with those. Ducks have too many 3rd line players and need to add a legit top line/6 guy and that pushes someone out... Strome seems like the best candidate.
