#87 Sidney Crosby Milestone Thread - History will be made: 20 consecutive PPG seasons

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Another amazing stat:

Since Guenztel was traded last March, which was thought to be the end of the Pens playoff chances in the Crosby/Malkin/Letang era, Crosby, Crosby is 5th in scoring and 4th in ES points and 1st in 5 on 5 points.

Only the Big 4 have more points.

He is outscoring the best Pen by 46%, Kucherov is outscoring the best Bolt by 42%.

I couldn’t stand Syd when he was young. I didn’t want to give him credit for anything. The Kovalchuk point was my favorite early Crosby moment.

Here we are a generation later and I have no choice but to have nothing but a ridiculous level of respect for the guy. Hardest working elite level player I’ve seen in my lifetime and he deserves the accolades. I never thought his skill level was quite at the level of the top five kind of players but he’s shown he’s up there and the consistent production is going to place him squarely in the top ten. I think depending on where he ends up there’s going to be a good argument about how high he belongs. Higher than we would’ve expected earlier on.

So, what we’re saying is that the entire point of the Pens is for Sid to break some random records? Just get Sid his points, never mind the team being a bottom feeder, and that Sid is a -22 this season?

Yea, yea - I kid Sid. Just having a little fun with the hypocrisy since we’ve been told that Ovi was selfishly chasing the goal record - and that the Caps were stupidly sacrificing the future, and any chance of winning for his sake.

In all seriousness: A 20th PPG season really is amazing. Crosby has remained great as he’s aged - it’s very impressive. Breaking Howe’s record for points/one team would be also be something.

-22 on a - 48 team

Ovechkin in 13/14:

-35 on a -4 team

This is a cute thread. I am sure it will be written down in some book a few chapters after Ovies Goat records.

What are their record count btw. Like most of this and that whos done this and that ? Is there any website that hold any statistics ?

Alexander Ovechkin's NHL Records

  • Most career power-play goals: 280+ (All-time leader).
  • Most career game-winning goals (active player): 125+ (as of 2025).
  • Most goals in a season by a Russian player: 65 (2007-08).
  • Most career goals by a Russian player: 890+ (2nd all-time, closing in on Wayne Gretzky's record of 894). Soon to be number 1 scorer in the history of NHL.
  • Most goals in one month: 16 (March 2021).
  • Most career goals scored by a left wing: 890+ (as of 2025).
  • Fastest to 800 career goals: 1,233 games.
  • Most goals in a season for a left-winger: 65 (2007-08).
  • Most multi-goal games in a season by a left-winger: 12 (2007-08).
  • Most 50+ goal seasons in NHL history: 8 (tied with Mike Bossy).

Sidney Crosby's NHL Records

  • Fastest to 1,000 career points: 759 games (fastest in NHL history). Helps when you get semi injured and always have fresh legs first half of his career
  • Most points in a single playoff series: 21 points (2017 Eastern Conference Semifinals vs. Washington).
  • Most assists in a single playoff season: 22 assists (2016 playoffs).
  • Most points in a Stanley Cup Final game: 8 points (2009).
  • Most playoff overtime goals in NHL history: 8 goals (as of 2025).
A) Why are you coming in here to stir up shit? Let Crosby have a place to have his accomplishments celebrated. The 20 years at point/gp is a huge stat and accomplishment. This is not a debate thread.

B) Did you use chatgpt to pull this? Like the most goals in one month for Ovi is not correct. And I think every single one for Crosby there is incorrect.

Why engage? We’re finally at the point that there’s no need to exhaust yourself explaining how every conceivable nuanced factor and context shows Crosby is a markedly better player and has had a notably greater career than Ovechkin - 87 is going to end his career in the next few seasons with 200+ more points than the other guy who brought nothing to the table other than his (admittedly also top-10 all-time) offense.

To be fair, you're the exact opposite side of the problem to the poster above that took a bunch of fake stats above.

"Every conceivable factor shows Crosby is better"

"Crosby is markedly better"

"Crosby has a notably greater career"

"Ovi brought nothing to the table other than offense"

If you can't admit that:
a) there are multiple arguments and factors that go in both players direction, and
b) that regardless of who you have higher, it is close

then you really either have no idea what you're talking about, or are biased as shit (just like that poster above in Ovi's favor).

I really hope Sid gets the chance to pass the torch or mentor one of the next great players. Not sure it's Gavin Mkenna or Mike Misa. Would be pretty poetic for the franchise.

Another strong Olympic performance if Crosby is on that team or it's captain. Incredible player. Another PPG season.
