#87 Sidney Crosby Milestone Thread - History will be made (MOST FACEOFFS WON IN NHL HISTORY 2025-01-07))

Crosby's PPG finishes:

1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11, 13, 13, 16, 17, 19

Jagr's:

1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 12, 14, 14, 16

Eliminate the duplicates

Not much else to celebrate. Passes Bergeron.

1 goal from #600. Looking ahead and for him to get to #700 he would need 101 goals in the maximum of 184 goals in 226 games. That is a pace of around 0.44 GP/G which his last three seasons have been at. I really hope we can see the Penguins get some young talent away to create opportunities to get him there.

Obviously playing every game is unlikely. He's missed 195 games in his career (Not adjusting for seasons that were shorter due to COVID but using the new, adjusted total as the benchmark). Based on his career stats, so not his potentially higher production for each individual year, that would be another 90 goals and 249 points. Would #800 have been possible?

Player A
1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3

Player B
1, 1, 1, 2, 3

Eliminate the duplicates

1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3

So player A has an advantage of 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3

These Crosby rules are getting crazy.

Why not just settle for reality where Player A and Player B both had 9 top 3 finishes, but Player B won 5 Art Rosses and played a minimum of 75% of the schedule in all nine of those seasons?

Sorry but this is pretty misleading. How many of those #1 finishes were in the seasons where he played a fraction of his team's games?

Almost no one would consider 22 games ranked 1st in ppg superior to 82 games ranked 2nd in ppg. Or equal to 82 games ranked first in ppg. But that's what you're doing by "eliminating the duplicates."

I have as much respect and admiration for Crosby as anyone else.. he doesn't need to be propped up by specious arguments like this.

That’s going beyond what “eliminate the duplicates” is meant to show. It’s simply a way of saying Player A and B have some things in common, but here‘s a list of things they don’t have in common.

That’s a fair criticism, not of eliminating duplicates but of using PPG ranks in the first place. Doing this with actual points finishes makes more sense as it accounts for sample size.

Do you understand what a per game basis is?

Sure but it's only one metric, sorta like counting stats in the early 80's one can dig deeper for context on most any metric.

Sure like the only player in NHL history to have his first 19 NHL seasons at a PPG+ rate.

PPG ranks are a better way to measure talent level though, point totals are more of what you've achieved in your career.

True, and ideally we’d see a balance of both numbers.

The problem with just showing PPG ranks is that you’re giving the same amount of credit for a 10-game season as for an 82-game season, and we know for certain that the 82 game season is a truer indicator.

As an example, let’s say the worst thing happened and Ovechkin was done for the season with this knee injury. He would finish the season on pace for close to 70 goals. Now with all due respect, we all know that the likelihood of his actually hitting 70 goals is close to nil. One reason that’s so unlikely is the high chance of injury, which is exactly what took place. So it doesn’t quite sit right to say he just had one of the greatest goal scoring seasons of all time, ending before Thanksgiving. This goes double if it’s someone like Necas getting his season cut short after a hot start.

IMO a good way to balance this into a single statistic is to show PPG ranks with a minimum number of games, like 60, which is high enough to account for hot streaks or fluky circumstances.
