Would you all give a matching deal to Blake? Tho I really do think he’s our best trade chip to eventually acquire a #2 C or #1 RD.
Not because he hasn't earned it but not at the moment because I don't believe he's staying. I really like the kid, but I agree with you that to get a piece we need, he's probably gone.

Hell yes!! Stank is probably damn near worth that contract at this very moment, as he gets more comfortable, grows (his game, not stature...well maybe who knows), etc, this contract will likely turn into an absolute steal! He must really like it here because he probably could have kicked the can down the road 2 years and gotten $8M+ especially with the rising cap

What's his upside? 80 point winger?
Absolute peak season in a high powered Cup contending Top 6? He could be a PPG player.

Realistically, a 60 point guy who ends up coming alive for the playoffs every year. His game is tailor made for the postseason. No surprise he scored a handful of big goals for us this past run.

I like this deal a lot, huge upside, but hopefully there's no trade protection here. Now Blake and Nikishin. Blake or Stank could still be traded for a big upgrade and contracts like this only add to their value.

If he didn't ask for trade protection, I would be shocked. There would be absolutely no reason to accept such a deal otherwise, and besides, to sign a guy like that to this kind of deal, only to trade him immediately, would be an absolute slap in the face and would have a chilling effect on future FA negotiations.

He can ask, doesn't mean he'd get it. And there's plenty of reason to sign without trade protection. $48M guaranteed, completely set for life. His career high is 38 points so to get that much guaranteed right now even with no trade protection is a total win for him. I'm not suggesting we would trade him at all, let alone soon, but possibly in 2-3 years if the right superstar became available.

I'm sure Stankoven gets trade protection once he is eligible for it.

I believe a player cannot get trade protection until they are at least 25.

The player has to be eligible for UFA status. So, yeah, 25 with the asterisk: need to have accrued 7 professional Accrued seasons, so to have entered the league at 18 for good.

I would be very surprised if there was no trade protection at all. He's only eligible for the last couple years anyway, and it's just so rare these days that players don't have some form of trade protection if they're eligible. Everyone on our roster (except Janko, but signed by the Preds) has trade protection to some degree. GMs (and especially Tulsky) are getting pretty creative with protections so it's not nearly as black and white and restrictive as it used to be.

You could also argue that it's an important tool for this team in particular, this market having a reputation for being a great place to live (and stay) so it's a good chip to bend on a bit to keep winning on the AAV side.

Those rosy words Stankoven had for the organization the other day weren't lip service. This is a good one. He scored last year at about a 0.5 PPG pace. In a few years, that will be worth $6M. As others have said, this is good value even if Stankoven doesn't improve. What we hope for is better finishing. The good news there is his most common linemates were Jordan Staal, Jordan Martinook, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Taylor Hall, and Jack Roslovic. I think if you give Stankoven some better passing, he'll be a more lethal scorer. We need to put all our promising offensive talents with the Jordans their entire ELCs and then move them to a top 6 role day 1 of their 8 year 2nd contracts. :naughty:

This is really good for the Hurricanes. A breath of life comes when a young guy joins the team for a handful of games and then calls it home.

That said, our best contract is easily Seth Jarvis. Slavin is my favorite player of all time, but we're getting him on the back end. Stank is great but he may never get the finishing we'd like. But Jarvis signed for all his best years as an already Selke-level defensive forward who scores at close to a point per game. If we bridged Seth last offseason, say for two years, he would be making $10M on this next deal. That's a bit of silver lining to me for us not keeping Guentzel and Pesce.

Both are great contracts (and so is Aho) but I can't say Jarvis' contract is better than Slavin's unless he gets to that Brayden Point peak level offensively. 90+ points, 40+ goals. He very well could but until we see it Slavin's contract is better. Back end, sure, but his style isn't one that will age poorly and right now he's easily worth like $11-12M per year if not more and he's getting 6.4. Part of that is league wide undervaluing of defensive defensemen but still I think it may be the best contract in the entire league, personally.
