Cro feels strongly about rewarding fringe guys like this, you can even tell in the way he described what happened. He's not gonna change. What's funny is what he said about Minty, he's playing well so this is an opportunity for him to sit and potentially lose some of that good mojo. makes no sense logically even.

I know Kylington had some mental issues but lets not pretend he's like some legend in the Flames org. Fans never came out to watch him - this was plainly and simply Cro rewarding a player who means nothing to the Ducks either. and if it comes at a cost of a player like Minty, well **** all.

You don't have to, the players probably do though
I'm sure they do. Sit a vet then.

The issue is the idea that youth development time is expendable is a really troubling thing in a development year from a guy who is supposed to be a development coach. And to call it an "opportunity" to watch and observe? Minty has gotten plenty such opportunities. Game time reps is the most important thing for a young player. Dumoulin was moved specifically because Minty and Zell were benched too often so it seems that Verbeek feels that Zell and Minty have had their fill of watching and observing.

Ultimately the problem isn't that Minty was a healthy scratch again. That is a problem but it's not the main issue. The mentality and justification behind why is nonsensical. It would be one thing if Mintyukov was struggling badly and needed a game off to watch and get his head on right. That's not the case. He was benched just to give Kylington a feel good moment. Maybe it's deserved, maybe it's not. He's a 27 year old 7D who is here in case of injuries and will be quickly pushed out when Luneau and Solberg graduate, if not sooner. There's very little runway left to develop these kids before they go off on summer vacation. If Kylington getting a feel good game appearance was so important then sit a vet. You can even sit a forward and dress Kylington as a fourth line W. The vets are all playing like they want a vacation anyway.

I agree with all of this. It was dismissive to make that lineup decision last week and the way he spoke about it today was dismissive as well. Cro just wanted to thump his chest about how great it was that he could do that for Kylington, and believe me and it was a bigger deal for Kylington/Cro than any Flames fans.

He had nothing insightful to say for why Minty needed to sit, no rationale whatsoever. Just a cursory and ill-defined reference to an 'opportunity.' If anything, he made an argument for why Minty should've played that game.

I guess this is going to get me jumped on, but I actually thought playing Kylington in Calgary where he spent his best years was a nice move on Cronin's part to reward a player who's had to sit a ton but is still working hard.

Mintyukov sitting one game after playing a bunch wasn't going to kill him and I'm sure Cronin explained the situation.
Seconded here, I agree. Complete nothing burger.

Cronin loves himself some 4th liners and 7/8 dmen. He's salivated over these types numerous times in his 2 years as HC. I've always felt that coaches with a real affinity for borderline NHL talent probably aren't high-calibre coaches. It might sound kind of cutthroat but it's just something i've felt.

Just crazy to think Pat thought of him as being a good developmental coach. Have any of the players he coached in Avs org become good players?
Logan O'Connor is the only one who has consistently played for the Avs after spending significant time with Cronin in the AHL, Jean-Luc Foudy is still spending time in the AHL but has featured in the NHL for the Avs. Kiefer Sherwood did pretty well in the AHL for Cronin but he had already played in the NHL. Quite a lot of the 1st/2nd rounders that passed through the Avs' AHL team were traded e.g. Newhook.

I think Cronin is genuinely good for fringe guys because he is an advocate for them. I don’t think he has the right skillset/frame of mind to deal with highly-skilled offensive players.

Oh yeah 100% - I was just naming the players because you asked and I was curious too.

If we were competing for the playoffs (legitimately, not this cross-every-finger-and-toe-in-hopes-we-squeek-in) I'd be more upset about benching minty for a feel good moment. But as it stands, meh.

Oh god a PP
