I think in a vacuum, there's something to be said for taking one game to treat one of your players fairly even if everyone knows he's an expendable waiver wire guy.

Of course, this is not a vacuum (despite the fact that Cronin does suck). Not to mention, the previous time the Ducks played in Calgary this season, this same coach who wanted to be fair to Kylington refused to put Zellweger back in the lineup in his hometown after he'd been sitting for three or four games. So him wanting to be fair to guys all of a sudden rings awfully hollow.
That's a great point. He isn't ****ing Jarome Iginla lol

Olen totally got shafted

Cronin loves himself some 4th liners and 7/8 dmen. He's salivated over these types numerous times in his 2 years as HC. I've always felt that coaches with a real affinity for borderline NHL talent probably aren't high-calibre coaches. It might sound kind of cutthroat but it's just something i've felt.

Just crazy to think Pat thought of him as being a good developmental coach. Have any of the players he coached in Avs org become good players?

Cronin is the coaching equivalent of a 7th/8th defenseman so it makes sense.

Hopefully he will have the "opportunity" to see what unemployment looks like soon.

Wonder if we will see Luneau and Moore given opportunities for the last 5 games after this. Likely need to rest today due to AHL schedule but Wednesday we may see one in the line up.

Hopefully Trouba stays out lol, don't give Cronin the chance to scratch a kid playing well.

Anaheim doesn't have any roster spots available unless a player goes on IR or we send down a waiver eligible player like Nesterenko, Colangelo, Helleson, Minty, or Zelly. I'd feel terrible for Moore if he doesn't sign his ELC before the last game of the season.

If memory serves, a while ago someone wrote about Cronin's time in the AHL as a coach and how he mostly coached older AHL vet types and not younger developing players. Probably explains why he loves his tweener AHL/NHL type players as it's really all he knows. I think it was @Hockey Duckie but I could be wrong.

I assume you can just send down Kylington right? If he gets picked up it won't matter. Or are you not able to send down this late?

Also Johnston could go on retroactive IR, maybe Trouba too.

Roster limit doesn't apply after the deadline, does it?

That was my impression as well. He was never responsible for their big names

I guess this is going to get me jumped on, but I actually thought playing Kylington in Calgary where he spent his best years was a nice move on Cronin's part to reward a player who's had to sit a ton but is still working hard.

Mintyukov sitting one game after playing a bunch wasn't going to kill him and I'm sure Cronin explained the situation.

If you're going to be dispensing favors, sit Gudas. He's exhausted and playing poorly. Young guys need to play as much as possible.

Nobody would disagree it's a nice thing for Kylington. But for me:

Minty getting reps >>> Being nice to Kylington

Pretty sure it’s pretty common for players to get favoritism for games vs their old teams or their hometown. It’s just the way it is and don’t hold that against Greg .

My only problem is i would have rather dressed 7 d for that game and let harkins watch or something - in the grand scheme of things I’m not really bothered by minty sitting a game here or there though

I guess I see it differently. One game of reps for Minty is not greater than Kylington perhaps getting to play for the last time in the place where he built his career. I think that speaks well of a coach's connection to the roster.

I know people brought up Zellweger not playing in his hometown earlier in the season. I'm not a huge fan of that, so perhaps Cronin learned from that one.

"We were terrible against Calgary," Ducks head coach Greg Cronin said. "We had an off-night, those happen. We hadn't had one, I think, since the St. Louis game (last month). Vancouver, believe it or not, I liked the way we played. There were five or six minutes there where the game got away. I think three of those were just kind of seeing-eye shots that found their way through to the net.

"I think we hit four or five posts that game, and four were direct post shots. That game could have gone either way if the posts that we hit in the first period had gone in and their deflections hadn't gone in. But, would have, could have, should have. I liked the way we played."

"(Those games) were tough," Trevor Zegras said. "Calgary, we weren't very sharp. Them scoring on the first shift was a good precursor for the rest of the game. Vancouver, I thought we actually played pretty well. They just scored five quick ones and then it was pretty much over. But I thought our effort was pretty good and I thought we played better that day than Calgary."

"It's nostalgic," Jones said about coming back to Honda Center. "A lot of memories, a lot of lifetime relationships that I've built––me and my wife––in this city, so definitely nostalgic coming back. It's a cool feeling and it was really nice to see all the guys yesterday and this morning.
"It was a really tough situation in Boston. (The) team struggled all year, a lot of moving parts there. It was part of the road you've got to travel that takes you somewhere like Edmonton (with) a great hockey team and trying to win a Stanley Cup. It's definitely a weird year. Still trying to come to the realization that I'm in Edmonton now and play for these guys. It's very cool."

"It's always nice (coming back)," Henrique said. "So many great memories here, so many great people, too, that meant a lot to me during my time (in Anaheim) and still (do). It's nice to come back and see some familiar faces and say hi, catch up, those sorts of things. But, when it comes to game time, it's all business. But, certainly nice to (catch up)."

I see both sides but really only care about our young guys getting reps

Just like you never miss an opportunity to be the lone voice of dissent still defending the guy.

Sorry but Mintyukov has missed a ton of games already. I couldn't give that much of a f*** about a 27 year old who doesn't fit into the team's long term plans having a feel good moment over the development of our youth, especially when the kid in question has missed a ton of games. Sit one of the veteran D if it's that important.

I agree. I have been very vocal about my issues with the coaching staff but this seems pretty straightforward. Someone has to come out so that Kylington can play against his past team. This is just a nice move that Minty most likely had no problem with doing in order to support his teammate. There are so many reasons to not like Cronin as a coach, but being kind to 7th defenseman during a non-playoff season for 1 game is not one of them.

I don't totally disagree but these two sentences back-to-back is pretty hilarious
