Roster Building XXVI: Picking Our Teeth Off the Ice

The more realistic press box occupant is jost and 7d.
Well sure--but forum rules require me to either be sarcastic or reference food--so I chose sarcasm. I don't make the rules, I just have to follow them.

But yes, with Nikishin coming over and Carrier starting to skate with the team - Jost's days with more than a practice jersey are numbered. The more interesting question is who sits in the playoffs when both Carrier and Nikishin are available?

Agree. But, I have a feeling Stankoven gets moved in the offseason
I think you could easily see any one of Stankoven, Blake or Nadeau shipped out in a package for a 2C. Personally, I think they’d sooner ship out Nadeau than the other 2 though.

Blake and Stankoven “fit” RBA’s style to a T. I’m not sure if Nadeau can hack it enough defensively for what RBA demands. Granted, Nadeau turns 20 in just a few weeks so he has plenty of time to figure out that side of the game, as it’s obvious his offensive game is where it needs to be. I just see them moving Nadeau over the other 2, when his value is going to be sky high coming off such a promising rookie AHL season and 2 more yrs of ELc left. He or Morrow might end up the key part of a package to finally solve the 2C position.

I go back and forth on Nadeau, as his shot is exactly what the Canes need on one of their woeful PP units, but I just have a gut feeling he’s the one they’ll use for a roster upgrade.

I do hope in the last 4 games they bring up Nadeau for a look at him at the NHL level. It’s not like the Canes or Wolves really have any left to play for in the regular season.

I go back and forth on the trio but have settled on:
BLAKE- a keeper
NADEAU - a keeper. RBA can teach him D but his shot is NHL elite.
STANKOVEN - good fit for Staal line but if we needed to trade one that would be the guy

Stank is way better than the damn staal line.
Perhaps but that’s how the depth chart works out right now. Stankoven is a grinder that doesn’t have a great shot nor the in zone moves that Blake displays. Nor does he have great skating speed (damn I sound too critical of him).

So, if I had to trade one it would be him.

I think we can mostly agree that Blake is pretty damn close to untouchable at this point. Nadeau/Stank if we choose to move out a righty forward is an interesting one. Personally I try to move picks or just keep all these guys another full year or 2 to have more info before trading. Of course if a legit cost controlled top line/pair player or 2C comes available and that team wants one of those guys we may have to consider it. But I’m just not moving Blake. I was as high on Necas as anyone but I like Blake even better. He and Jarvis are long term core pieces in my eye

Blake has been amazing this year, but feel he's being over valued here as well. Only time will tell, but I really think he's already close to as good as he's going to be. Nadeau is the only one who brings something we don't have (off-wing/elite shot).

Yes, Makar started in the 18/19 playoffs without any regular season games. They even put him on PP1 almost immediately.
I was at the game, and I sat in the end the Avs were shooting at in the first and third - in the lower bowl. He had maybe one practice with the team the day of the game, and he started on pp1 with Landy, Mack, Rants and I can’t remember the other. It started with Mack running the show, in less than a minute Makar was running those other guys. On pp1 in the playoffs. I may actually have some video of that.

They’re all great.

I think Stankoven and Nadeau actually have a higher ceiling than Blake, but Blake is the most likely to stick around. However, I don’t think any of them are untouchable. I’d easily part with one++ of them for a young, proven 2C.

Even with dealing one of them, you still have the other 2, plus Unger Sorum coming up eventually too.

I don’t think we’re moving any of those guys. Nadeau would probably be the first to go if someone had to to be traded but I doubt any of them do. The other two are legit in the lineup already, Nadeau has work to do.

What 2C is available for trade?

They targeted Stank in the first place. I doubt he’s going anywhere.
I can't think of a 2C for trade off-hand. Have to wait and see who shakes loose in the off-season. But even when I look at 2026 UFA centers I don't see many players likely to be dealt this off-season.

I think it's more likely they try to sign Bennett (if he makes it to July 1) or Brock Nelson. Heck, if you're looking for one of those short-term high $$ players, why not try it with Tavares?

I don't see many teams willing to move a signed C in the off-season. Maybe Minnesota moves on from Marco Rossi, but there would be a lot of teams bidding for him if they do.

Edit: I'd love to see Rod let Jarvis and Stankoven try to transition to C during this off-season. With the number of righty wings they have, they can afford to have one of them move to C. I think Jarvis makes the most sense for that, but if either Jarvis or Stankoven can make the transition it helps immensely.

As far as their ceiling goes, that's where I'm at as well. And ya anyone not named Aho, Jarvis or Slavin or has a NTC could be moved for the right future trade imo

It's a stretch to say we "targeted" Stank. We were backed into a corner trying to salvage the Rantanen situation -- we got what we could for him and Stank was the best roster player Dallas made available. I could easily see him moved. I've liked what I've seen from him so far in a more limited role and I do want to see him here once he has a full offseason under his belt and time to get adjusted to the system, but so far this year he is clearly a tier below Blake IMO.

I agree on Nadeau as we haven't seen him in the NHL yet, but the interesting dimension there is he has a skillset different than anyone else on the team with a potentially elite shot that can put up 30+ goals a year and be a weapon on the PP that we've sorely missed. He's similar size and a righty skilled winger so similar to Jarvis, Blake and Stank in that way but really his shot separates him a bit as someone we probably want to keep for that reason. Not to mention he plays LW I believe, so not really competing with those other guys for top 6-9 RW spots.

One way to potentially solve this backlog is to just give Jarvis a real look at 2C.
