Prospect Info: #69(nice)OA - Hurricanes select LHD Alexander Nikishin (Spartak - KHL)

Doesn't he have some sort of set max or something for elc? I mean we have a shitpile of cap space..

Isnt is like 950K max with something like 3M in bonus? Prorated for playoffs is what? Just pay the man the max elc for f*** sake

I read “sex mat” and was wondering just how below board these negotiations were going.

I honestly don't know. I'm just speculating that Dundon isn't doing the "cheap" thing that he gets accused of fair or unfair.

I'm thinking that SKA isn't in a hurry to let him go yet for whatever reasons.

He does need to be released before getting a contract, then needs to get his visa settled before coming over here.

It's concerning that SKA has released so many of the other players for other teams, but are (apparently) dragging their feet for Nikishin. Normally, no news is good news, but in this case, no news makes it seem like something has gone wrong

Yeah unfortunately if there was anyone they’d put the screws to in an attempt to keep them there it would be him.

Dundon and Tulsky are likely struggling with the price of bringing him over now vs the summer. Rod plays a factor here. The guy has a much better shot at an every day role in the off season obviously. We’re going to pay a ton of money when Rod is unlikely to give the guy a big role until next year. He’ll get some of these remaining games I’m sure but he’s really unlikely to be an every day guy in the playoffs unless there’s injuries. They don’t want to pay a fortune for whatever is remaining plus unknown playoff time. I can’t really blame them, he’s “free” if they just wait. We’re not a team that throws money away.

Steps:
1) negotiate release with SKA
2) negotiate contract with Canes
3) Obtain VISA

I suspect Nikishin's agent, Ryan Barnes of Quartexx is working all 3 right now with the Canes contract terms done or just about (I'm thinking that if Nikishin had Millstein he would be signed already).

For some reason, SKA is playing hardball because:
a) they want to retain him, have offered a deal & are waiting for a response or
b) Nikishin's agent has not found the "right formula" to make SKA move quickly. Millstein, Demidov's agent, has a boatload of Russian hockey players and positions his agency as an agency with Russia expertise. Thus, I suspect he probably knew the "right formula".

An excerpt on attached article on Millstein: "Without going into detail, Milstein said his agency has also found a way to fast-track Russian players getting visas to play in North America".

It’s hard to think there’s something other than money in the way, and Dundon is notorious for being involved in negotiations and grinding deals. If it isn’t the team it’s the player contract, or both.
as Chaz pointed out above it could be a visa issue, if that's still being sorted then no telling on how long it's going to take.

So, someone refresh my memory: do we burn an extra year of his ELC if he comes over now?

I can totally see a willingness by this front office to take an extra year of cost controlled Nikishin.
Yes, so in a way SKA is hurting his ideal long term outlook if they are truly playing hardball and not letting him get over here sooner.

I'd be surprised if the Canes aren't willing to burn a year after how drawn out the process of getting him here has been. Especially after all they did for the NCAA trio last season. Just my opinion though, I certainly don't claim to be Dundon-brained.

(PS: unpopular opinion alert, but I'm not sure they'd be wrong)
Agreed. As much as I want to see Nikishin, I don't see him playing in the playoffs. Is it worth him getting a couple meaningless regular season games?

More importantly, is it worth signing him if the visa is an issue and he's not going to get ice time this season?

I’m good with that, 100% onboard, if that’s what happens, as long as it’s abundantly clear to the player that it’s SKA’s “fault” and it doesn’t jeopardize his relationship with us. We saw the fallout of messing around with negotiations with Guentzel. You never really know with Russian guys whether they’d happily go back to SKA at the drop of a hat once they see that NJ and Montreal are willing to pony up what’s needed to get their guy to come over early and Carolina isn’t willing to do the same.

But if we can make SKA the bad guys in all of this, I’d prefer 2 cheap years of Nikishin as opposed to Rod clumsily incorporating him into the lineup (and, knowing Rod, probably the press box) for this playoff run and only getting him cheap for 1.
