Prospect Info: #69(nice)OA - Hurricanes select LHD Alexander Nikishin (Spartak - KHL)

If, say, SKA out of the playoffs early, and Nikishin's season is over, will Carolina sign him to play in the coming NHL playoffs?
By all accounts as soon as SKA will let him out of his contract the Canes will sign him. The question of whether he will play in the playoffs is anybody's guess. Rod is known to favor veterans heavily over young guys however he also does reward young guys who have put in the work and really show they belong like Jarvis and Blake recently -- I would think Nikishin will very easily fall into that 2nd category but the question is will Rod have enough time to actually see him in person with the team to make the call to give him an opportunity or will he heavily weigh what Nikishin has done in the K up to this point? Like I said, anybody's guess.

If I had to guess I think Rod will either make him the #7 or rotate him in on the 3rd pair. If SKA gets knocked out in rd1 and Nikishin could make it over in the regular season that could change things though.

At this point I'm more worried about Morrow being sent down when Orlov comes back.

Whatever happens with Nikishin will happen. If we play him, it burns a ELC year, if we don't we get an extra year of low cost, and if we can use SKA not terminating his contract early as an excuse to have that extra year, even better. I do fully expect we'll have him inked to a max extension contract as soon as we can negotiate his after-ELC deal.

Take Alexander Nikishin, the captain of the club and the top prospect of the Carolina Hurricanes. After his many years of service to the organization, his representatives and SKA have come to an agreement that he would be able to leave early to join the Carolina Hurricanes for the NHL Playoffs.

uhhh..... ok then, I guess its actually happening

17 of his 22 PPP’s came in the first 27 games of the season.

He has only 5 PPP’s in the last 32 games.

He’s the main PP QB on a PP that’s been under 10% in the year 2025. Id agree he’s scratchable if the coaches feel Nikishin or maybe Morrow could step in that role today.

That’s fair, but I’d certainly scratch someone like Orlov before Ghost.

Also, how the hell does Burns only have 2 PPPs this year? That’s inexcusable.

imagine choosing to play someone because of their contributions to the 2025 Carolina Hurricanes PP

No, I was trying to follow the logic of “Hey, our PP is bad. Let’s scratch the guy that’s somehow producing on the PP despite that” Wouldn’t you want to keep he players that are producing in addition to adding Nikishin/Morrow?

Because FTMP, Burns plays the 2nd PP unit, which typically does f**k all for us.

Didn’t he start the year on the first unit, get kicked down to the 2nd, then Ghost got injured, so he went back to the first, and then it was like pulling teeth to get Rod to move him off that top unit again once Ghost returned from injury?

Ghost wasn't injured for that long. It felt like a while, but it wasn't really.

Gostisbehere played 1st unit from the start. Per NST, in October, Burns and Aho, a proxy for the top unit, saw 1:11 together. Aho and Gostisbehere: 34:59.

He’s in the lineup because they’re willing to sacrifice defense for offense. The PP is an important part of those expected offensive contributions. As pointed out above, his meager production recently is replaceable. Therefore, he could be as well.

So when the powerplay was successful, Ghost was on the top unit then? I don’t see the issue.

The point you’re missing is that his “meager production” is still the most productive PP player on the team. Removing a player that produces on the PP to try and improve the PP makes no sense. The PP should be Ghost AND Nikishin/Morrow, not Ghost OR Nikishin/Morrow.
