I don't see a way this impacts Nikishin's arrival negatively:

The coach stepping down would only make it easier to leave after this season.
He's no longer under contract so there's no KHL barrier to Nikishin leaving.

That said, I don't see SKA missing the playoffs to accelerate Nikishin's arrival. They are in 7th in the conference (only 2 points out of 3rd), but the top 8 make the playoffs and SKA is 11 points clear of 9th. So they are almost guaranteed to at least play in the first round.

Honestly that is encouraging news for his odds of coming over soon. I have still had a tiny little bit of fear he’d stay another year and try to chase a Gagarin Cup — SKA being a mess makes that significantly less likely. (And honestly there was already a great chance he never even considered that, I’ve just been going from his past interviews about what he wanted to accomplish in Russia)
