Prospect Info: 60th Overall, Albert Johansson, LD

I wouldn’t mind getting a look at him with Seider at some point to see how they work as a pair. Edvinsson - ASP seems ideal and it’d be amazing if Johansson could be Mo’s partner.

He's having quite the glow up. I know some were suggesting him being paired with Seider before the season started, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious now. If this continues, it definitely adds a wrinkle to how I think any upgrades to the blueline should go.

Is it crazy to think he has a future in the top 4?

If AlJo can develop chemistry with Seider then Ed can play with ASP.

Finding bottom pair guys that can play 16-18 minutes a night is a lot easier and less expensive than a top 4 guy to play with Mo or Ed in trade or free agency.

There are some posters around here who have said for quite awhile that if the guy can translate his game up that he'd potentially make a good partner for Seider. I don't think it's crazy at all to see Albert being a top4 guy going forward.

Vindication 5 years in the making!

There were many of us that saw the glimpses of a future top 4 guy. It’s only been about 7 games that we’ve truly seen it, but the way he’s playing looks sustainable to me. If he can elevate his offense and become a 30 point guy.

If Buium or Wallinder pan out then Detroit has a mostly homegrown D corps that we can be pretty happy with.

AlJo - Seider
Edvinsson - ASP
Buium - UFA/trade (I’d love to get a solid Tanev type of vet here.)

Has AlJo always played D on his off side, or are they just playing him there to keep him with Ed?

I don't watch the SHL, or the Griffins ... excuse my naivete.

So he could, and probably should be with Seider. But the ED pairing is just so good.

I mean AlJo has been almost a miracle the way he's improved his play on every level. Just awesome.
He'll get to there eventually, I am pretty sure T-Mc will want to try it out for sure, as he will want to evaluate Al-Jo's potential ceiling capacity!

In GR Ed and Al-Jo were are pair for quite a bit (likely by design), but Al-Jo has been really taking flight the past few games.

Because we don’t want our two blue chip righties ASP and Seider on the same pairing.
Ain't no guarantee ASP is ready for top 4 ES duties right off the hop. I think people should prepare for the possibility that he needs some seasoning in GR and some sheltering on a 3rd pairing before he gets there.

F U Ken Daniels, you're not the boss of us. Stop trying to manifest this bullshit...

I know you are currently on crusade that AHL is unnecessary, but imagine there is a non-zero probability of young players struggling in the NHL and needing time down in the AHL, because they cannot keep up and don't belong yet. Unfortunately a lot of teams like Sabres have shown they that throwing young players to wolves immediately does not work. i understand that ASP has already 2 years of additional expereince in the SHL, but still, nobody is a sure thing. If ASP is Lane Hutson level defender, i think he will need to go to the AHL

what is working in ASP's favor is that the guy he has to beat for a spot is Justin Holl.

I think we see Yzerman try to re-work our blueline again this summer, especially if Albert finishes the season showing he can play in the top4. If we can shift Albert to Mo's pairing, we can deal Chiarot, and go after a real RD to pair with Ed.

Given how horrible Skellefteå is, I think there's a good chance ASP and MBN come over for the Griffins playoff push. Maybe that expedites things a bit.

I'm good keeping Ed and Aljo together and still seeking out a LD for Seider. While I think long term Ed/ASP will probably be a pairing I don't think slow rolling ASP a bit will be bad. I mean maybe he comes over and blows everyone away, but I think he might struggle a bit at first defensively. With Aljo doing so well with Ed this allows us to keep ASP in GR for a year or potentially play him as a 3rd pair/PP guy for the 1st year. I think that might be best for his long term development.

As long as we get a good dman or a short term LD, we can always make trades later. Good dmen are always in demand. We just need to make sure said new dman isn't Chiarot, Petry, Holl, Gus 2.0.

Well done Albert! You’ve given us a third young dman that we can count on. Next year I hope we have two more in ASP and Buium. I still have hopes for Wallinder also
