Its amazing the upgrade in defense they made in 1 year, from this team to the cup team. Dumping Ward, trading for Seidenberg and developing Boychuk and McQuaid. And then trading Wideman for the scorer they needed once Kessel left.

Its amazing the upgrade in defense they made in 1 year, from this team to the cup team. Dumping Ward, trading for Seidenberg and developing Boychuk and McQuaid. And then trading Wideman for the scorer they needed once Kessel left.

Two seasons, actually.

But trading for Seidenberg was the key. He gave them a legit solid #2 who wasn't a liability like Wideman. Having a great veteran core there allowed for Boychuk and McQuaid to step in and develop too. Ward was good but past his prime and almost done. Montador and Hnidy were average at best, and Mark Stuart never developed into the defensive rock we were expecting, peaked as an okay 2nd pairing guy, more like a solid 3rd pairing guy in the end.
