Value of: 5th OVR pick from NAS (to MON)

And this is the real point. No team will ever give up a blue chipper for supporting players, now matter how much you offer them. If they see someone at 5 who will be a cornerstone of their franchise, you can throw Hage, Mailloux, Fowler and both firsts and it might not move the needle. Obviously that's different if they don't see the options at 5 being foundational pieces.
Habs hopefully don't offer Hage, Mailloux, Fowler and both firsts.
Nope our GM isnt that stupid

we shouldn’t be packaging picks and prospects yet . just because we made the playoffs last year doesn’t mean will be regulars there yet . we had no injuries last year ( compared to other recent years ) and could realistically take a step back next year . take the next 12-24 months to see what we have with all these prospects and unload matheson and laine (+1 more with max retention at the deadline ). patience .

Well, the OP isn't really doing that. He's packaging futures to get a better future.

Way too risky for MTL, being that this is a weak draft, and Desnoyers or whoever else is there at 5 is probably equivalent to a 10-12th ranked prospect in a typical year.

This has the potential to turn out very badly for MTL. Fowler has mid-high end #1 potential, there’s a pretty decent chance that whoever they take at 16 ends up as good or better than whoever they could get at 5th, and it’s the same thing with Hage.

This isn’t the kind of year to make a deal like this. Pass.

Exactly. There is nothing at 5 worth trading Hage for even.

Really tired of Habs fans offering the moon for French sounding names. I don't care about Desnoyers.

Nashville might have screwed up big time by trading Askarov for peanuts, doesn't mean we should do the same with Fowler.

See the thing is the Preds already have 16, 17, Dach, Mailloux types of assets. With more coming. What we don’t have is a #5 OA type of asset. We value the quality far above the quantity right now.
This was a joke, not a serious proposal. That is why I responded to “Halak, Ryder and a 2nd”

These are the four assets that are constantly offered in these Montreal posts. Lately “Laine at 50% retained” has been thrown in.

Habs aren't really interested in 5th, or at least shouldn't be.

This draft isn't good and 2 picks at 16/17 has a good chance to return a prospect just as good that you'd get at 5.

Unless Misa, Schaefer, or Martone fall.

It's IMO extremely likely that Desnoyers will go at 3 or 4, and the other 3/4 pick will be either Martone or Frondell. You should I think pencil in that Nashville's 5th overall pick is James Hagens.

Nashville has wanted a top center prospect for basically their entire existance. They got one or two. Legwand comes to mind. They REALLY want and REALLY need an elite center prospect. They've been waiting and waiting.

Now they finally (probably) have Hagens... and you're asking them to trade him away. Let's just say that the offer is gonna have to blow them away.

EDIT - ALSO, if Nashville wants a high end goalie prospect, they can take Ravensbergen at 23rd overall or 26th overall.

Nevermind that the whole reason Nashville was reportedly offering up Askarov in the 2023 draft was because 2023 had four centers that could all arguably go 1st overall in a typical draft year...

We got a 1st and a recent 1st for a prospect that requested a trade, hardly peanuts.
It wasn't exactly "peanuts", but both Edstrom and that #26 draft pick will have to pan out above normally expected levels for it to turn out to be a decent trade, alas.

Askarov played most of the year in the AHL this season too, so the whole trade request scenario was a self-inflicted wound created by Trotz's own mismanagement.

Of course, it's still possible that Askarov won't be able to be a successful NHL #1 goalie also. Although that doesn't seem like too much of a concern atm. San Jose at least gets somebody who is "on track so far" to fill exactly that need they had.

But anyway, I just don't think this trade should be taken as much of a precedent-setter for anything that happens in the future, either from a Nashville perspective or elsewhere in the league in general. Prospect trade requests are rare, especially for goalies, and Nashville and San Jose were both in relatively unique situations.

Would Preds fans here prefer a prettyyy good center prospect, or like a quite good prospect at C + a very good goalie prospect?

I am inspired by this rumor which initially came, I believe, from Pierre LeBrun, saying that at the 2023 draft, NAS offered I believe the picks 15 + 24 + Askarov for the pick 5, which MON denied to pick Reinbacher. Since then, Askarov has been traded and we already start hearing comments that NAS should have held on to Askarov a tad longer, and that now they should look for a goalie prospect.

It seems Habs have a very good one in Fowler... And I know NAS is looking for a center prospect at this draft. Habs are looking for a 2C long term to play with the young guys already here... So would NAS fans consider something like Fowler + Hage for pick 5? Or maybe Habs should add the pick 16 or 17 with that package?

In my mind, Habs do that if Desnoyers is still on board. Maybe Frondell (I'm pretty sure one of both, or both, will be out of the board by pick 5). But are Preds fans gonna call me crazy for even considering this?
Montreal won't touch this. Difference between 5 and 16 not worth giving up Fowler
