To be honest, I think if we got NHL average coaching, we'd be a playoff team this season.
Possible, but the issue is if our goaltending takes a step back, we’re in trouble even with better coaching.

We’ve rode Dostal and Gibson hard this year and I wouldn’t bet on their play continuing at this level next season. Doesn’t mean they’ll be bad though

there’s too many empty sweaters in the forward group.

We don’t have any superstars or anyone even close to superstar level so if we’re going to be a playoff team we need quality players top to bottom in our forward group, even on the 4th line

Have to upgrade on the margins this offseason
After swinging and missing on marchesault and stamkos. And with sennecke coming next season. What we need is to overpay for the best available 3-4th line players. We need top tier depth

Have to give players like Colangelo and Pastujov a cup of coffee to end the year so we at least have some sort of an idea of what we have going into the offseason. Then Verbeek can figure out what upgrades need to be made externally
Agreed.... we also need our 4th line... to do something.

They dont really hit much, they dont really score much... they just there free skating most nights.

I'm not even trolling but red wings fans IQ are so far below the average NHL fan. Add years of Fugu coddling them when she was mod and it has created an interesting psychology experiment.
I thought there was only something in the water in Flint, but I guess it's for all of Michigan

Don’t feed the troll. All reasonable and intelligent fans know that the strides we’ve made are in spite of Cronin’s mismanagement
Crazy when vehemently expressing how much you hate your own team's head coach is considered perfectly normal but one guy dares to give him credit and he's "trolling"

Personally I think with better coaching we wouldn't be so reliant on goaltending. All we really need is a coach to implement a solid NHL level system, we haven't had that since RC (until it all fell apart in 2017).

Obviously a couple of better players would help, but the fact we're so close with a bottom 5 coaching staff in the NHL, I'd be optimistic of making the playoffs with a better coaching staff.

I'm personally of the belief that the eventual regression of the goaltending combined with the offense continuing to play to potential will essentially cancel each other out

Potentially, but the goal is to get better, not to tread water

Thus, either the coach needs to go and/or we need to upgrade the roster. And likely need an external upgrade at some point.

They're already way better than they were last year and the players are still developing and in all likelihood will only get better. Couple that with us being in a perfect position to push our chips in in the offseason and I see no reason to worry about being 6 points out of the playoffs at this juncture

I went into the main board to read the reactions to the two different threads and was reminded as to why I don't venture in there outside of the prospects board.

They have more points than last year.

Dead last in SA/G
Dead last in GF
31st in PK%
23rd in PP%
30th in SAT% and USAT%

We are getting good goalie play, and are playing mediocre teams. It’s fun, but they’re not good. Getting multiple goals with the goalie pulled is not a sustainable strategy.

The last few seasons were so shit that they can still be a significantly improved team on what we've seen recently without necessarily being "good"

This is true. We are not catastrophically bad defensively this year, merely bad. Most nights we look like we belong on the ice and have shown the ability to outplay teams much better than us.

The offense is terrible, but sometimes they score, and I would like to see the numbers maybe from December to now because it feels like it's more 20-25th since then rather than worst in the league bad.

Special teams are atrocious, the coaching is bad, and the middle/bottom of the roster is full of debatable NHL players. The young offensive kids don't play with much offense, but everybody tries and nobody gives up.
