Did they get smoked?
Nope. Flyers (SVA) xGF 64.41%, HDCF 55.55%

One of those games where the breaks went against them, then things cascaded.
Both Devil PP goals came off bounces that went right to a Devil player in front of the net.
Flyers had numerous chances, either they didn't get the bounce, missed an opportunity or Allen made a great save.

Part of the process of rebuilding, first you learn to be competitive night after night, then you take the next step of finishing. They took too many bad penalties (Foerster, Frost) and a couple mistakes leading to odd man rushes.

2021-22: xGF 45.79% (27), HDCF 45.03% (28), GF/60: 2.51 (23), xGF/60: 2.45 (24) (ES)
2022-23: xGF 47.32% (24), HDCF 47.27% (23), GF/60: 2.49 (28), xGF/60: 2.55 (25)
2023-24: xGF 52.34% (8), HDCF 53.34% (9), GF/60: 2.58 (26), xGF/60: 2.73 (19)
2024-25: xGF 52.93% (7), HDCF 54.06% (6), GF/60: 2.76 (14), xGF/60: 2.74 (15)
last 31g: xGF 58.56% (1), HDCF 59.79% (1), GF/60: 2.94 (4), xGF/60: 2.96 (6)

At this point, the basic structure has been established. For the rest of this season:
1) get the PK back to the top ten, fix the PP and get it into the middle of the pack
2) stabilize the goalies
3) reduce mistakes, bad passes, bad penalties, getting caught out of position

Upgrade the top 9/top 5 the next two seasons.
Every starter is above replacement and they have Richard, Abols, Andrae, Grans to step in.
Depth is no longer an issue, now it's about adding quality.

Briere has stated they won't be adding quality. They won't be built that way.

You've stated they should, though. This openly disagrees with the Flyers. Do you agree, then, that their approach is terrible?

So they've done the easy part, but all is great because the much more difficult ones are still there and have no obvious solutions.

We're a year or two out from the American Psychiatric Association recognizing this as Flyerphilia.

Now I'm doing paraphilia bits for maybe 1 person tops. But probably just myself. That's the state of the franchise.

"Briere has stated they won't be adding quality." Citation? Link?

Fedotov is starting tonight.

Tortorella said that he wanted to get Fedotov work last night and then proceeded to say that he’s also starting tonight.
When was the last game Fedotov started? Last Thursday. Before that a week off.
Probably saw an opportunity to shake off some rust with the game out of hand.

Don't kink shame me!

They've done the hard part, improving 5x5 play is harder than STs.

You can pick up FAs like Ghost at a reasonable price for 3rd pair/PP1 QB duties.
You can add a PK specialist for your 4th line.

Goalies, they're a crap shoot in any case, just look at Demko, Jarry, etc.
Only solution is to keep the pipeline full and cross your fingers.

Once the basic roster is in place, you can be opportunistic pursuing upgrades.
People look at Wash and say why can't Briere do that? Well, first see if it's sustainable, a lot of teams have had one year jumps then regressed back to their mean.

My rule on GMs: "first do no harm." A series of stupid moves can tank a franchise for a decade and still not deliver a Crosby or MacKinnon.

Briere directly said it. We won't be built that way. We would only have a couple high end skill guys. He compared us to Colorado and affirmed we won't do that

the basic roster really though..isn't in place
Most of it is. Jett and Bonk will arrive sometime next season.
Barkey et al are more tenuous. Mostly depth (AHL plus, 4th line/3rd pair) unless someone surprises.
And 2 or 3 pieces will come this summer, draft picks and/or trades.

So replace Risto (only top 9/top 6 that will age out).
Seeler (3rd pair), Laughton and Hathaway (both 4th line) will eventually be replaced.
I expect Couts to move to LW at some point.
The rest will be upgrades to current players.

So probably two big moves, top 6 center, top 4 D-man.

I think he meant it's hard to get those guys (and Colorado is down to MacKinnon and Makar now).
Doesn't mean he doesn't want quality, just is realistic about obtaining elite (top 30 or so) players.

Kyrou and Thomas aren't elite, but the Flyers would love to add a couple forwards like that, or a Carlsson on defense.
