Q: will Canes wait out the last 6 weeks of Freddie’s injury period or make a trade?

Since the market is thin (I had hoped they would have tried to get Askarov for a 1st and prospect) I’m thinking they just wait it out unless PT gets hurt. Borg probably thinks goalie position is set with Freddie back but other lineup needs are more important for playoff run.

Our highest paid players this year have been our worst players.

Between Aho, Svech, Jarvis and Orlov we have $32.67m tied up in guys who are just not performing. 37% of our cap. Just not acceptable, they need to be the ones driving play, they need to be the ones loading up the scoresheet, especially the 3 forward players, and they've all been complete passengers this entire season.

I have no idea what the answer here is. I don't think trading them is what we need to do, but I also don't know how you get more out of them. Svech looks like a guy who is probably going to be a disappointment over his career with the way his development has completely stagnated the last couple years. He's a guy who absolutely should be more physical than he is, and most nights you really just don't even notice him out there. Aho's regression this year has been shocking. Him making top dollar needs to be the kind of player who makes those around him better, certainly not the kind of guy who sulks and regresses to replacement player level of play when one of his friends signs elsewhere.

Orlov has been one of our best, if not our best defensemen this year. He and Chatfield have taken on the role that Skjei and Pesce performed in the past and surprisingly, have done it fairly well. They are the only pair that are > 50% for GF% 5v5 and have the highest xGF% as well.

Ghost and Walker have been very sheltered, faced much lesser competition and have almost 100 less minutes TOI than Orlov and Chatfield and have given up just as many goals 5v5. Burns and Slavin, with similar TOI but slightly tougher competition have given up 4-6 more goals than Chatfield/Orlov.

I started to type out a response about how Orlov was a weird inclusion in that group but trashed it with a “whatever who cares” lol

Rod needs to set some lines and stick with them. Starting Svech off with Jost and Blake to start last night is borderline crazy. A first year rookie and a ahl centre it’s just mind boggling Rod would even think that line would last more then a period that’s not setting a guy up for success

Svech has been disappoint.

He, himself, used to always mention how he needed to get physically involved to feel engaged in the game. Instead he's been waving his stick rather than finishing his checks. I think he needs to focus on the physical part of his game more.

Our forecheck hasn't been good. Landing a hit in the corner is what makes dmen nervous and rushed and leads to mistakes. Carrier is the only one who has done really well there.

I have no qualms with Roslovic or Blake but they're guys you attack with off the rush not guys who play a heavy forecheck game. The team talks about emulating Jordo but many of the forwards are not equipped to play his style game.

I don’t really see aho as being any different than he has always been. Svechnikov has definitely not taken the step forward everyone has been expecting him to take for some time now though

Watch goal #2 and goal #4 against last night.

Goal #2, he gets somewhat of a pass on. He does lose the board battle to Josi as Josi is entering the zone, but Josi has the speed, momentum and size to win that battle. It was Roslovic who abandoned Marchessault and then failed to block the passing lane he had created.

Goal #4, it's another board battle, against Novak, I believe. Aho actually gets control of the puck, but flings in up the boards, where it's blocked by another Pred, who I believe sets up Jankoski to walk uninhibited to the high slot and fire one over the shoulder of the screened Toker.

And if this was an occasional issue, it wouldn't be as big of a deal. But it's not. That line is leaking goals, and their production at even-strength speaks for itself at this point. And while I understand the frustration about the line blender and needing to build chemistry, doing nothing to that line while it's playing like it did last night also isn't a solution.

Watching last night's game made me think how Rod would love to coach a roster like the Predators.

Still think there is a disconnect between Rod and Tulsky.

This is not to say that RBA has lost the room but I find it interesting that it is the long-term Canes under RBA that are sleepwalking this season.

Guys like Carrier, Robinson, Jost, Ghost, Walker, Chatfield-Orlov all are typically leaving it on the ice but Svetch, Aho, Jarvis, KK (& Necas lately) seem to have caught the TT disease of picking their spots to play hard while sleep walking for a big part of the schedule. Now is that a natural step back from all out effort from a veteran player that recognizes the challenges of a long season or the fact that the same voice over multiple years with an exhausting grind it out approach that gets drowned out?

See, the problem is that Aho, Jarvis and Necas all signed deals relatively recently that guaranteed they’d stay in Carolina for a bit. And given that the team had signed RBA (or the assumption was that RBA would re-sign) before they did, they signed those deals with the understanding that RBA would be their coach for a while. So for them to suddenly tune him out (if that’s what’s happened) speaks more on them than it does on Rod.

Svech could probably use a change. He’s not lived up to what we’re expecting from him, he’s getting bounced up and down the lines and seeing no improvement in his play. If I were Tulsky, I’d definitely start putting feelers out there to see what teams might offer for him

I mean these dudes are all human. The last game before a holiday at the end of a few straight days of condensed travel against a western conference team is practically begging you to take your foot off the gas. I’m sure it irks Brind’Amour but it honestly may not be the worst idea- Tampa pretty transparently sandbagged regular season games for a while to make sure they were ready for the playoffs and it turned out ok for them. They had the cap shenanigans going too though I guess but it doesn’t make the occasional off game the end of the world

Which would be a valid point if they haven't sucked like they did last night for over almost a month now

It’s also possible after over a half decade of great regular season results and going all out in every regular season game these guys decided to not try that hard or care much during the regular season. I’m not concerned at all about this team. They are already far exceeding most people’s expectations for this season.

I mostly agree with this stance. Watching the line up mixing occur for almost 2 months, it looks a bit like they have a starting over from scratch persona vs having an (adjusted) contender identity now. I don’t think the premature tinkering by the coach helped their confidence with the changes either.

I can see how some of the remaining vets might not love the change in status or be quite as motivated at the moment. The system is not known for being an easy way to play under ideal scenarios. Losing key team members while experiencing a few years when expectations were very high (even if things didn’t end as hoped), it’s not hard to see how a letdown happens. It kinda reminds me of when free agents sometimes avoid rebuilding teams due to what that entails.

Is it difficult to completely buy in if the season is mostly being seen as a “write off” year in the media and with fans (more empty seats, quieter arena)? One in which making the playoffs is considered the big success vs winning it all?
